Liverpool's Urgent Need for a Midfielder: Lamine Camara Solution

Liverpool can see the solution. The clock is the problem.

They need a midfielder – urgently, obviously, painfully. Anyone who watched the draw at Newcastle United didn’t need the numbers to tell them. The middle of the pitch was a motorway, and Newcastle drove through it at will.

Liverpool couldn’t stem counters. Runners burst straight at an exposed back line, again and again. There was no natural shield, no midfielder whose instinct is to plant himself in that space, read danger, and snuff it out. Put a genuine anchor in there and the whole structure looks different. Right now, that player doesn’t exist in this squad.

And yet one appears to be staring them in the face.

Lamine Camara ticks every box Liverpool have been sketching out for months. A rock in front of the defence, but not just a destroyer. At 22, he’s already shown across multiple seasons that he can carry a huge defensive load and still create for his team. That blend is rare. At the top level, it’s gold dust.

The numbers back up the eye test. Among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, Camara stands alone: he’s the only one in the top 10 per cent both for share of defensive workload and for creating big chances for 25/26. Only one. And he’s still only 22.

This isn’t a one-off spike, either. The 24/25 data tells the same story. Again, Camara is the only midfielder to hit that top 10 per cent bracket in both categories. Two seasons, same output, same profile. That’s not a hot streak. That’s a pattern.

Put another way, he looks about as close to a guaranteed fit as you get in the transfer market. He does everything to an above-average level for a top-five-league midfielder and is genuinely elite in the exact areas Liverpool are crying out for: defensive coverage and chance creation from deep.

And here’s the twist that makes this all the more baffling: he’s on the market.

Reports, including from Foot Mercato, say Chelsea are moving ahead in talks for Camara. Liverpool, crucially, have been offered the chance to do a deal. In a window where late moves are notoriously hard to pull off because clubs refuse to sell without time to replace, this is a rare opening.

Yet the indications are that Liverpool will let it slide, turning their attention to other targets. Chelsea, sensing the opportunity, are pressing on. Camara, seemingly tailor-made for what Liverpool need, looks set for Stamford Bridge instead.

If that happens, Liverpool will be left chasing an alternative – one who will almost certainly be tougher to prise away and, on every available measure, a worse tactical fit.

They don’t just risk losing a midfielder. They risk watching the perfect one line up in blue.
