Liverpool's Wing Hunt and Arsenal's Alvarez Gamble: Transfer Window Insights

Liverpool’s search for width has turned into one of the sagas of the summer – and it has just taken another sharp turn.

Fresh talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola have given Liverpool renewed encouragement, with figures inside the French club now expecting the winger to leave before the window shuts. The problem is the price. PSG’s Qatari ownership want well over £110m for the France international, a figure steep enough to send Arsenal walking away earlier in the window.

Liverpool, though, are still at the table. They have already seen two bids knocked back for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh as they try to deepen a squad described internally as “a boat with six different leaks”. The need for reinforcements out wide is clear. The money to do it is not.

That is where Cody Gakpo comes in. Manchester City retain an interest in the Dutchman and Tottenham have been linked, raising the prospect that Liverpool could cash in on a rival-strengthening sale to help fund a move for Barcola. It is the kind of chain reaction that has come to define this market: one big exit to pay for an even bigger arrival.

Behind the scenes, the pressure is mounting. Liverpool’s football hierarchy, led by Richard Hughes, head into the final week of the window knowing the squad simply has to be bigger for Andoni Iraola’s high-intensity football to work across a full season. The budget, though, will not stretch to every problem area. Every pound spent on a winger is a pound not spent on depth elsewhere.

Arsenal circle Alvarez to crown their window

Across north London, Arsenal are trying to land a statement forward to round off what they consider a strong summer of business. Julian Alvarez has become the focus.

The Atletico Madrid forward is open to the move, even though his initial preference was Barcelona. Arsenal see him as the final piece to sharpen a forward line tasked with defending their Premier League title, a versatile attacker who can score, press and knit together Mikel Arteta’s front three.

The pursuit is complicated by a wider web of deals. Atletico Madrid are already sounding out options to replace Alvarez. One of them is Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, with talks over a loan that could include an obligation to buy. Chelsea, for their part, would rather sell outright as they clear out fringe players before deadline day. Aston Villa are also considering Jackson, with a £65m deal discussed.

If Atletico do land Jackson, it could smooth Alvarez’s departure. Arsenal are in that familiar late-August territory: close enough to believe, far enough away that one twist elsewhere can still derail everything.

City rip up their midfield – and spend big to do it

Manchester City, under Enzo Maresca, are rebuilding the core of their team at astonishing cost. The latest move is a €100m agreement with Lille for 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

City will pay an initial €95m with a possible €5m in add-ons, making the Morocco international the third most expensive player in the club’s history. Only Elliot Anderson, who joined for £116m, and Jack Grealish have cost more.

Bouaddi arrives as part of a sweeping midfield overhaul after the departures of captain Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders. City want energy, versatility and long-term control in the middle of the pitch. They are paying elite money to get it.

At the same time, City have sanctioned a record sale. Savinho has joined Tottenham in a deal worth £85m, replacing Julian Alvarez as the most lucrative outgoing in the club’s history. Spurs will pay an initial £75m, with £5m of add-ons guaranteed and another £5m potentially to come. The Brazilian becomes one of the three most expensive signings in Tottenham’s history, alongside Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, and takes their summer spending past £300m.

City’s business may not be done. Interest remains in Liverpool’s Gakpo, and there is still the possibility of reviving a move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, a transfer that would instantly become one of the stories of the summer.

United fix the middle, eye the left

On the other side of Manchester, United’s midfield rebuild is complete. Carlos Baleba has joined from Brighton for an initial £65m, with a further £5m in potential add-ons, to round off a £148m overhaul under Michael Carrick.

The Cameroon international has signed a five-year deal and arrives as the third major midfield addition of the season. United wanted legs, control and a younger core in the centre of the pitch. They have paid heavily to secure it.

Attention now turns to left-back. Alejandro Balde has become the priority target after a significant development in Spain. According to reports in Marca, the Barcelona defender has decided he wants to leave following Joao Cancelo’s arrival and his omission from the squad to face Elche. That stance has given United a major boost.

United are seen as frontrunners for Balde’s signature, but their preference is for a loan rather than the permanent transfer that had previously been discussed. With the midfield business done, the final week of the window at Old Trafford may hinge on whether Barcelona are willing to compromise.

Chelsea cash in, Forest break their record

Chelsea’s clear-out continues. Nottingham Forest have agreed a club-record £50m deal to sign striker Liam Delap.

Delap, signed from Ipswich for £30m, struggled through a disappointing first season at Stamford Bridge, scoring just two goals in 41 appearances and losing the No 9 role to Joao Pedro. Chelsea will bank a £20m profit on the 23-year-old, who is expected to complete a medical on Wednesday.

The London club’s attacking reshuffle does not stop there. As they explore exits for Delap and Jackson, Chelsea are open to bringing in a versatile forward if enough outgoings are completed. Marcus Rashford is one name that has been discussed internally as a potential option.

If Jackson does move to Atletico, the dominoes could fall quickly: Chelsea free up space and wages, Atletico secure an Alvarez replacement, and Arsenal or Barcelona finally get clarity on the Argentina forward’s future.

Newcastle find their Bruno replacement

Newcastle have moved to plug the biggest gap in their squad, agreeing a £52m deal with Manchester City for midfielder Nico Gonzalez.

The 24-year-old Spaniard becomes their marquee summer signing, with an initial £48m fee and £4m in add-ons. City will make a small profit after signing him from Porto for £49m in January 2025.

Gonzalez is set to become the oldest player Newcastle have recruited this summer as the club reacts to the departures of captain Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali. The 2025 Carabao Cup winners wanted more experience in the middle of the pitch; Gonzalez, currently undergoing his medical, arrives to steady that department.

Villa’s uneasy wait as Watkins and Martinez sit out

At Aston Villa, the anxiety is growing. Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez were both missing from the matchday squad, fuelling talk that the pair are edging towards the exit.

Watkins’ situation is the most advanced. A move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal is described as very close, a transfer that would end a hugely productive spell at Villa Park on a sour note. Club and player were very good for one another. The manner of the departure is set to leave a mark.

Martinez’s absence only adds to the sense of unease around Unai Emery’s squad as the final days of the window approach.

Deals are lining up across Europe, each one tugging at the next. Barcola, Alvarez, Enzo, Gakpo, Watkins: the names are there, the money is on the table. With a week left, who blinks first?
