Liverpool in Talks with Valencia for Harvey Elliott Loan Move

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.

The Spanish club have emerged as frontrunners for the 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several sides over the summer but now looks closest to a switch to La Liga ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1.

Elliott is understood to have already spoken with Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his prospective role at Mestalla. The proposed loan is also expected to feed into Liverpool’s longer-term planning, with the club considering a contract extension to protect the value of the former England Under-21 international, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028.

For now, his Anfield prospects look limited. Elliott has yet to make a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola, a continuation of a frustrating spell in his career after last season’s loan at Aston Villa.

That move never really caught fire. Elliott barely featured at Villa Park, even as Unai Emery’s side surged towards Europa League glory. A late cameo in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle 12 months ago locked him into two clubs for the season and ruled out another move in the January window, but Villa were still careful with his minutes.

The Midlands club were determined not to trigger the clause that would have turned the deal permanent. Had Elliott reached 10 appearances, Villa would have been obliged to buy him for £35m. He stayed on the fringes instead, watching a successful season unfold without ever becoming a central figure in it.

Back at Liverpool in the summer, Elliott joined the pre-season tour of the United States and cut a candid figure when asked about his future after a 1-0 win over Wrexham in New York on July 30.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions," he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

Liverpool had been expecting Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. Those talks are now active, with both clubs working on the terms of a loan agreement as the clock runs down.

Elliott joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already made 149 appearances for the Reds. The next move will decide whether that tally pauses, or whether a season in Spain can relaunch a Liverpool career that once looked set to run straight through the heart of Anfield’s future.
