Liverpool’s transfer window is lurching towards a conclusion that feels anything but controlled, yet one major deal now looks close to breaking loose.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool are “continuing their talks” with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola and expects the club to “accelerate” negotiations in the coming days. After weeks – arguably months – of haggling, it finally sounds like Liverpool are ready to push hard to get the French winger through the door.

They badly need to.

Hughes on the way out, questions piling up

Richard Hughes is nearing the end of his spell as sporting director at Anfield, with a move to Al Hilal edging closer. His time in charge has been anything but dull.

Under his watch, Liverpool have lived both extremes. They celebrated another Premier League title, then stumbled through chaotic windows in which some of their top targets turned them down in public view. In his first summer it was Martin Zubimendi who slipped away. In his third, Yan Diomande. His second window landed more of the club’s primary targets, but several of those signings have yet to justify the money.

Supporters have felt that tension growing. When a sporting director runs recruitment, fans want to see a clear plan, a structure, a sense that someone is two or three moves ahead of the market. Instead, recent weeks have looked messy.

At times, Liverpool have resembled a club throwing darts in the dark and hoping one lands on the bullseye. It is not the kind of image that reassures a fanbase staring at an unfinished squad on the eve of a new campaign.

The Premier League season is hours away. The squad still looks incomplete.

There are gaps all over the pitch and, crucially, Andoni Iraola does not yet have the full set of players he needs to imprint his football on this team. This is not how Liverpool imagined the summer unfolding when plans were being drawn up months ago.

Yet the Barcola saga has dragged on. Liverpool and PSG have been locked in negotiations for a long time without a decisive breakthrough. It has started to resemble a test of nerve, a game of who blinks first.

For a squad already light on depth, that is a dangerous game to play.

Even if Barcola signs, he will not fix every issue. Liverpool still need another winger capable of operating on the right, especially after the enormous void left by Mohamed Salah. Ibrahim Mbaye has been floated as a possible option, but senior figures at Liverpool have downplayed the idea that anything concrete is happening there. For now, that interest remains exploratory at best.

So the same problem circles back: Liverpool need reinforcements, they need them quickly, and the pool of realistic options shrinks by the day.

Against that backdrop, Romano’s update offers at least one clear thread. Liverpool are still in active talks with PSG for Barcola, and he expects the club to ramp up their efforts in the coming days. Given the length and intensity of the negotiations, that points towards a belief inside Liverpool that an agreement is within reach.

No signatures yet. No medical booked. But the noise around this deal has shifted from static to movement.

If Liverpool finally land Barcola, it will be a major piece of business and a badly needed injection of attacking quality. The question is simple: will it arrive in time to steady a window that has veered too close to chaos for comfort?
