Liverpool’s summer rebuild has already ripped up one part of the squad. Now a homegrown midfielder could be next, and Newcastle might be the club that sets the whole thing in motion.

Three fresh faces are through the door at Anfield: Jeremy Jacquet, Ronald Araujo and Victor Munoz. Araujo’s arrival on loan from Barcelona, with a €55m option to buy, shores up the back line and frees Liverpool to look higher up the pitch.

Out wide is the next priority. Liverpool are chasing PSG duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, and if both deals land, Cody Gakpo could be nudged towards Tottenham. The reshaping is clear, and it’s starting to squeeze those on the fringes.

Curtis Jones sits right in that spotlight.

The 25-year-old is into the final year of his contract. There are no talks over an extension. No suggestion of a late U-turn. Inter Milan, Serie A champions and long-time admirers, have been pushing to take him to San Siro after failing with a move in January.

Two bids have already gone in this summer, the highest around €30m. Liverpool initially held out for closer to €40m–€45m, a price that reflected both his age and his homegrown status.

Now the stance appears to be softening.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter believe a deal can be struck at €35m, roughly £30m. He states that Inter have kept Jones as a “priority target” since May and feel a move “could happen” at that fee. The Italians are ready to try again before the window shuts, but there’s a catch: they need to move Davide Frattesi first.

That’s where Newcastle step into the frame.

TEAMtalk report that Newcastle have been offered the 26-year-old Italy international, with Inter ready to sell at around €30m, roughly £26m. If Newcastle decide he’s the man to plug the Guimaraes gap, that fee could unlock Inter’s move for Jones almost immediately.

The chain is brutally simple. Newcastle take Frattesi. Inter take the money. Inter go back to Liverpool with a fresh bid close to €35m. Liverpool, increasingly open to cashing in before Jones walks into free agency next summer, have a decision to make.

For Jones, a Scouser who grew up at Liverpool and broke through as one of the club’s brightest academy hopes, it would mark the end of a long, personal chapter at Anfield. For Liverpool’s new era, it would be another clear sign that sentiment is taking a back seat to hard, strategic calls.

All eyes now rest on Tyneside. If Newcastle pull the trigger on Frattesi, the dominoes are lined up for Curtis Jones to be the next big name out of the Liverpool door.
