Liverpool Faces Pivotal Week in Squad Overhaul

Liverpool are staring at a pivotal week. The window is ticking down, the squad still looks light, and the questions are getting louder.

Andoni Iraola walked into Anfield with the expectation that he would reshape this team. Four first-team players have already gone. Three have arrived. On paper, none quite match the calibre of the men they’ve replaced. The overhaul feels half-finished, and the clock is already in stoppage time.

Supporters, though, are clinging to the idea that the former Bournemouth boss can still bend this season back in their favour. They have to. The club wants to challenge for trophies again, but the squad, as it stands, looks short of that standard.

Salah’s shadow and a stalled rebuild

The biggest issue has been staring Liverpool in the face all summer: replacing Mohamed Salah.

That should have been item one on Richard Hughes’ to-do list. The sporting director knew at the start of July that Yan Diomande would not be the answer, yet weeks have drifted by without a definitive successor to the Egyptian King.

Bradley Barcola has moved to the top of the wishlist. The Frenchman would be a statement signing, the kind of electric wide forward who could help redefine the attack. But Paris Saint-Germain’s asking price is sky-high, and that fee is dragging the talks into a stalemate.

As those negotiations stall, other names have been thrown into the mix. Each new link sparks another wave of debate among supporters desperate for clarity.

Mbaye interest and a fresh twist

Ibrahim Mbaye is one of those alternatives. At just 18, and already making a name for himself in Paris, he has attracted interest from several clubs, Liverpool among them. His age and potential make him a tantalising prospect, but they also ensure a crowded field of suitors.

That uncertainty has only fuelled anxiety on Merseyside. Then came an update from Fabrizio Romano that offered a measure of reassurance to the fanbase, hinting that Liverpool’s pursuit of their attacking targets remains alive rather than drifting.

They may need every option they can get.

Gakpo at the centre of a storm

Complicating everything is the situation around Cody Gakpo.

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are both circling, testing Liverpool’s resolve as they look to prise the Dutchman away in the final days of the window. If that happens, Iraola’s forward line could look radically different by this time next week.

On Sunday, Gakpo was Liverpool’s standout attacker. On current form, selling him now would be a huge gamble. Letting him go while the squad is already short in attack would invite fury, not just concern.

Even if Liverpool manage to bring in both Mbaye and Barcola, the numbers still don’t quite add up. Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with no clear return date, leaving another hole in the rotation.

A decisive week for Hughes

That leaves Hughes under intense pressure. The sporting director cannot afford to let the window close without adding real quality to the forward line.

If Liverpool reach deadline day without meaningful reinforcement up front, serious questions will follow. About planning. About ambition. About how a club with title aspirations allowed itself to drift into such a precarious position.

And that’s before anyone even dares to think about Gakpo walking out of the door.
