Liverpool's Midfield Dilemma: Mac Allister's Future in Question

Liverpool’s next big decision may already be in front of them, wearing the No. 10 shirt and scoring winners in Europe.

Behind the scenes, the club are working through a complicated puzzle ahead of the winter transfer window. The squad is strong but not finished, the midfield in particular still feels one piece short, and the homegrown quota is tightening the screws on recruitment.

The name at the centre of it all? Alexis Mac Allister.

A Midfield Rebuild with a Catch

Liverpool chose not to bring in a midfielder in the summer, then sanctioned Curtis Jones’ sale to Inter. That left them light in the middle of the park and leaning heavily on the hope that Trey Nyoni can jump several levels in a short space of time.

The expectation is that Liverpool will go back into the market in 2027 to address that gap. But they are working under the pressure of homegrown limits and a wage bill already carrying several high earners for what, in reality, boils down to two spots in the starting XI.

That’s where the ruthless side of squad planning has reportedly kicked in. Multiple reports have suggested Mac Allister is the one Liverpool are prepared to sacrifice to make room for a new midfielder, with Lamine Camara emerging as the preferred target.

On paper, it sounds straightforward. In reality, it’s anything but.

Romano: Mac Allister “Didn’t Want to Leave”

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has pushed back against the idea that Mac Allister is ready to be moved on. Quite the opposite.

Romano says the Argentine has no desire to leave Anfield and that his attachment to the club already blocked a move in the summer.

“What he says in public is the reality,” Romano told Caught Offside. “He loves Liverpool as a club, as a fan base, his teammates – so he’s very happy there. He didn’t want to leave.”

Those comments land at a delicate moment. Mac Allister has already spoken about his frustration at not receiving a new contract, especially after Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai secured fresh terms. The message from the player is clear: he wants to stay, and he wants to be rewarded accordingly.

Form That Complicates the Plan

If Liverpool did intend to quietly ease Mac Allister towards the exit to make space for Camara or another midfielder, his performances are making that strategy look increasingly awkward.

He has started the season sharply, anchoring the midfield and influencing games at both ends. His brilliant winner against Atlético Madrid underlined his importance and strengthened his case for an improved deal.

Every time he plays well, every time he contributes in a big moment, the logic of selling him weakens. Moving on a player who is in form, settled, and publicly committed to the club is never an easy sell internally, let alone to the supporters.

Yet the plan, as outlined by several reports and hinted at again by David Ornstein, still appears to involve cashing in on Mac Allister to bring in a new face.

For now, Liverpool are staring at a contradiction: a strategic blueprint that points towards a sale, and a player who is doing everything he can to make that blueprint obsolete. At some point, the club will have to choose which one they truly believe in.
