Liverpool's Defensive Puzzle: Luke Chambers and the January Transfer Dilemma

Liverpool’s defensive puzzle is starting to shift again – and Luke Chambers could be the next piece to move.

Iraola backs the kids – and retools the back line

Liverpool’s squad is heavy with bodies, from established first‑teamers to academy hopefuls, but last season’s brutal injury crisis exposed just how thin things really were. Arne Slot was forced into improvisation, yet aside from Rio Ngumoha, most of the club’s youngsters watched from the fringes.

Andoni Iraola’s arrival has changed that mood. The Spaniard has been far more willing to lean on youth, with Lewis Koumas, Trey Nyoni and Isaac Mabaya all in line for meaningful minutes this season. The message from the dugout is clear: if you’re good enough, you’re involved.

That shift has come alongside a serious attempt to reinforce at the back. Ronald Araujo and Jeremy Jacquet were brought in over the summer, a direct response to last term’s lack of defensive depth. Liverpool could not afford another year scrambling for centre-backs.

Even so, the club kept several young defenders around, including Mabaya and Luke Chambers, to ensure Iraola had options. Now that decision looks to be under review.

Celtic circle as Chambers’ future opens up

According to journalist Lewis Bower, Chambers has emerged on Celtic’s radar. Speaking on X, Bower said: “I wonder, eh. Celtic really like Luke Chambers.”

On the surface, it’s a minor note. Chambers is effectively Liverpool’s fifth-choice centre-back. Yet the fact the club are open to finding him a new home – and that the club in question is a Champions League winner – matters.

A January move to Celtic would offer Chambers the kind of regular football he is unlikely to see at Anfield this season. For Liverpool, it would also signal something else: a potential reshuffle behind him in the pecking order.

That’s where Ifeanyi Ndukwe comes in.

Ndukwe’s work-permit race – and the Levante problem

Ndukwe lit up pre-season. Despite his lack of senior experience, the Austrian defender looked completely at ease, stepping into the void left by Ibrahima Konate’s departure with the composure of a seasoned starter. His timing in the tackle, his calm on the ball – supporters quickly latched onto the idea that Liverpool had unearthed another long-term rock at the back.

There was only one problem. He couldn’t get a work permit.

Liverpool’s solution was straightforward in theory: send Ndukwe on loan, let him collect the necessary points, then bring him back into the fold. Levante became that stepping stone, a La Liga platform where he could bank minutes and accelerate the process.

But Levante haven’t played him.

Without games, there are no points. Without points, there is no work permit. And without a work permit, there is no early Anfield return.

That’s where the Chambers situation becomes critical. If Celtic do land him in January and Ndukwe still hasn’t played enough in Spain, Liverpool could be left with a gap at centre-back they had not planned for.

A choice looming for Liverpool’s hierarchy

Liverpool are expected to be active again in the winter window, and defensive reinforcements will inevitably be part of the conversation if Chambers moves on. Yet the ideal scenario for the club is obvious: Ndukwe plays, secures his permit, and walks straight into the role Chambers would vacate.

That route would spare Liverpool the cost and complexity of another signing and keep faith with a player who has already convinced many inside and outside the club that he can grow into a central figure – the sort of dominant presence they once found in Virgil van Dijk.

For now, though, the plan is stuck. Levante must use him, or Liverpool must rethink the pathway.

If Celtic do get their man and Ndukwe remains sidelined in Spain, Iraola and the Liverpool hierarchy will be forced into a decision: trust the next wave again, or dip back into the market and delay the rise of a defender who looks ready to seize his chance the moment the paperwork finally lets him through the door.
