Liverpool's Ambitious Attack Overhaul Before Transfer Deadline

Liverpool are pushing to reshape their attack before the transfer window slams shut – and they are dreaming big.

Bradley Barcola is set to arrive from Paris Saint-Germain as the marquee summer signing, but the France international is only part one of a frantic 36-hour rebuild at Anfield. The plan is bold: land another winger, cash in on Cody Gakpo, and emerge from deadline day with a very different forward line.

Sarr, Minteh and a Race Against the Clock

Journalist El-Hadji Loum reports that Liverpool would love to sign both Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh before Tuesday night’s deadline. That’s the ideal scenario. The problem is money.

Liverpool are already in deep talks with Crystal Palace over Sarr. Fabrizio Romano and other leading reporters say negotiations are active, while GIVEMESPORT’s Ben Jacobs has revealed that the Senegal international is “pushing” Palace to let him go to Anfield. Liverpool, Jacobs adds, currently favour Sarr, even with Palace reluctant to lose him so late in the window.

The strategy is clear. Secure another winger by 11pm tomorrow and Gakpo will be allowed to complete an £85m move to Manchester City. For a while, the Dutchman looked destined for Tottenham Hotspur, but City’s late intervention changed everything. The Etihad beckons, and Gakpo wants it.

Even that might not be the end of Liverpool’s business.

Loum claims that, ideally, Liverpool also want Brighton’s Minteh in before the window closes. The club have already seen a £60m offer for the Gambian rejected, and any double swoop for Sarr and Minteh would push the total outlay well beyond £100m in the final hours of the market. Loum is blunt: it all comes down to budget.

Liverpool know exactly what they want. Whether they can afford it is another matter.

Fixing an Attack That Has Lost Its Edge

This scramble comes off the back of a flat 2025-26 campaign and an underwhelming start to the new Premier League season. Two draws – against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest – have underlined how far Liverpool have drifted from their peak.

Mohamed Salah’s departure has left a gaping hole on the right and stripped the side of its most reliable source of goals and chaos. The current attack lacks the relentless threat that once terrified defences.

Barcola, Sarr and Minteh would change that in an instant.

All three bring raw pace and direct running. They stretch games, drive at full-backs, and drag centre-halves into places they hate. That kind of speed doesn’t just create chances on its own; it rips open space for others to exploit.

If Liverpool get this right, the knock-on effect could be huge. More room between the lines. More gaps for creators and finishers – the type of environment in which elite attackers thrive.

At Brighton, Minteh has already shown exactly what that looks like. Senior sports writer Charlie Parker-Turner hailed him after a recent performance, describing how Kaoru Mitoma and Minteh were “simply unstoppable” on the night, with Georginio Rutter bringing the best out of both. It was a glimpse of the kind of explosive front line Liverpool are trying to build.

A Title Bid Built on Speed?

Liverpool’s hierarchy know the stakes. They still look short in key areas, they still look a step off the pace of a genuine title challenge, and the early-season results have only sharpened the focus.

But an attack built around Barcola, Sarr and Minteh would look nothing like the blunt version that has stumbled through August. It would be fast, unpredictable, and ruthless in transition – the sort of front line that can turn tight games and ignite a title charge.

The club, and Andoni Iraola, want that “explosion of pace” to drag Liverpool back into the conversation at the very top of the Premier League.

Now it comes down to the final hours of the window, the numbers on the table, and one simple question: can Liverpool actually pull off the attacking overhaul they’ve drawn up on the board?
