Liverpool’s midfield rebuild may be about to gain a new – and quietly intriguing – piece.

Patrik Farkas, the Hungarian U18 international, has been spotted around the club’s U21 environment at the AXA Training Centre, with Anfield Watch reporting that Liverpool are now in advanced talks to sign him as a free agent. For a teenager without a transfer fee attached, this is starting to look serious.

Farkas steps into view

The detail is telling. Anfield Watch state that Liverpool are “in advanced talks to sign Patrik Farkas as a free agent”, and that he has been “participating in the club's U21 games”. That’s not a casual visit. Players don’t typically drop into competitive age-group fixtures unless a club is actively running the rule over them with a deal in mind.

He was also “spotted in the background of one of the images Liverpool released from their latest game at the U21 AXA centre.” On its own, that would be a footnote. Against the backdrop of ongoing negotiations, it reads more like a breadcrumb on a trail that’s clearly heading somewhere.

The report frames it bluntly: “That's a strong indication that the talks are advancing as hoped.”

Farkas, described as “the older brother of Erik Farkas”, would deepen a growing Hungarian thread running through the club. Should the move be completed, he would join a list that already includes Erik Farkas, Armin Pecsi, Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai, reinforcing Liverpool’s interest in that particular market.

This isn’t a marquee signing. It’s a development play. But it’s one Liverpool appear keen to get over the line before others arrive at the same conclusion.

Midfield calm? Not quite

All of this is happening while Liverpool’s senior midfield picture feels anything but settled.

The squad is not short on talent. The concern lies in what could still happen before the window shuts. Curtis Jones has drawn firm interest from Inter Milan, with approaches already turned away. Alexis Mac Allister, a central figure in Liverpool’s current setup, continues to attract admiration from major clubs across Europe.

The source material does not sugar-coat the stakes. “Losing either player would be a significant blow.” Then the sharper warning: “Losing both would leave Liverpool with a serious problem.”

That is the equation facing Liverpool’s recruitment team. They must weigh a promising free-agent opportunity like Farkas against the possibility of serious disruption higher up the food chain.

Inter’s interest in Jones has not gone away, even if Liverpool’s stance so far has been to keep him. Smart planning or warning sign?

From a Liverpool perspective, the Farkas story cuts both ways.

Supporters will look at Farkas and see a smart, long-term piece – a player who might grow through the academy pathway, strengthen the connection to Hungary and offer future upside. But they will also look at the senior midfield and wonder whether enough is being done, quickly enough, to protect the here and now.

Farkas may soon arrive. The bigger question is whether Liverpool can keep the midfield pillars he might one day hope to play behind.
