Lewis Hall Emerges as Manchester United's Top Left-Back Target

Manchester United’s summer planning keeps circling back to one name at left-back: Lewis Hall.

Despite being offered Arsenal prospect Myles Lewis-Skelly, United remain locked on the Newcastle defender as their priority target on the flank. Hall, 21, has emerged not just as a leading candidate on their shortlist, but as an active participant in the story — he is understood to be keen on trading St James’ Park for Old Trafford.

It comes after a chaotic few months on Tyneside. Newcastle have lost manager Eddie Howe and star trio Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. The hierarchy are desperate to draw a line under the exodus, and Hall is firmly in the “not for sale” category. New boss Matthias Jaissle is determined to avoid another major departure.

Hall, though, is pushing. United have already made an approach to explore the conditions of a deal, with Michael Carrick eager to add depth at left-back ahead of a return to the Champions League and a four-competition campaign. The defender’s frustrations reportedly stretch back to tactical decisions under Howe, which he believes played a part in him missing out on England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have tried to use the market to their advantage. Myles Lewis-Skelly has been offered to United as the Gunners look to recoup some of the money spent on Guimaraes. Chelsea have also been alerted to the 19-year-old, who is thought to carry a price tag of around £45million. For now, though, Hall stays ahead of Lewis-Skelly on United’s list.

Rashford, Rooney and a restless Old Trafford

While United weigh up their next move at left-back, Marcus Rashford’s name refuses to leave the headlines.

Carrick has twice underlined Rashford’s importance in recent days. After the win over Leeds at Croke Park, he told ITV: “He’s our player, and he’s come back great. I’ve known Marcus a long time, and he gives us something a little bit different, and he’s been in great spirit since he’s been back.” The manager has since suggested the forward could feature against AC Milan in the next pre-season friendly.

Rashford has spent the last one-and-a-half seasons away on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona, but the expectation now is that he returns as a central figure for the 2026/27 campaign.

Outside Old Trafford, not everyone wants that to happen. Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has urged Spurs to test United’s resolve, arguing they should go all in for the England international as they search for a new left-sided forward. He believes Roberto De Zerbi would be the ideal manager to reignite Rashford and describes him as still “one of the best players around” if he has a point to prove.

Off the pitch, another United icon is stepping back into the limelight. Wayne Rooney has landed a new podcast role alongside outspoken fan Mark Goldbridge. The pair will front “Stick to United”, a 50-episode show focused solely on the club, coming on the back of Disney+’s big-money deal for Gary Neville’s “The Overlap”. Rooney and Goldbridge will sit alongside Neville’s “Stick to Football” stable, which continues to feature Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Roy Keane. Episodes will run on Disney+ and YouTube, with subscribers getting early access to 20 exclusive shows.

Transfers, targets and a crowded midfield market

Carrick’s rebuild already has substance. United have six permanent signings and two free transfers through the door.

Karl Darlow has joined from Leeds United on a free, with goalkeeper Kit Margetson arriving from Swansea City without a fee. Cristian Orozco has been signed from Fortaleza CEIF, Andrey Santos has come in from Chelsea, Tynan Thompson has moved from Tottenham, and Youri Tielemans has completed his switch from Aston Villa.

Tielemans has already drawn high praise. Former United goalkeeper Ben Foster has labelled the Belgian the “signing of the summer” on talkSPORT, pointing to the £30–35m fee and arguing he is a ready-made starter worth “every single penny”. Foster, though, still sees a missing piece: a “big boy striker” to lead the line, warning such a player will cost close to £100m in the current market.

United’s search for attacking depth has thrown up several names. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson has been tipped as a potential option by former United midfielder Quinton Fortune, who describes the Senegal forward as an “out-and-out striker” obsessed with getting into the box and finishing chances. Any move for Jackson, though, is likely to hinge on Joshua Zirkzee’s future, with the club reluctant to overload the position.

In Belgium, United are monitoring Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi. The Germany Under-21 international has attracted interest from Chelsea, Tottenham and Barcelona, with Roma already seeing a €35m bid rejected. Brugge are thought to want around €45–50m (£39–43m). United view Tresoldi as possible competition for Benjamin Sesko, but again, any deal could depend on Zirkzee being sold.

Midfield is no easier to navigate. United are back in the race for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, a player they see as a controller capable of carrying the ball and dictating tempo. Palace have slapped a €100m (£86m) valuation on the 20-year-old, while United are believed to be willing to go up to around £70m. That gap is slowing talks, with Chelsea and Real Madrid also watching closely.

Lamine Camara of Monaco is another name on the list. United, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Liverpool are all keeping tabs on the 22-year-old, who could be valued at around €50m (£43m). Monaco, already braced for departures after Maghnes Akliouche’s move to PSG, are expected to demand their price in full before agreeing to sell.

One target, though, looks firmly out of reach. Eduardo Camavinga is determined to stay at Real Madrid despite United’s interest. The Athletic reports that Madrid have at least considered a sale, but the 23-year-old has made it clear he wants to remain at the Bernabeu regardless of offers. Any Old Trafford move would be an uphill battle.

Youngsters on the move, and those United refuse to lose

The academy conveyor belt is as busy as the senior market.

United are pushing hard to keep 15-year-old JJ Gabriel amid strong interest from Chelsea and clubs across Europe. The forward has exploded for the Under-18s with 29 goals in 32 appearances and is viewed as one of the brightest talents in the system. United are confident of striking an agreement once he becomes eligible to sign scholarship terms in October, determined to ensure his rapid rise continues in Manchester.

Godwill Kukonki is another teenager in focus. The 18-year-old centre-back has been a notable absentee during pre-season, sparking speculation over his future as he enters the third year of his scholarship without a professional deal. The Manchester Evening News now reports that Kukonki has decided to stay this summer. At 6ft 5in, he is expected to sign pro terms before heading out on loan, with Championship clubs such as Southampton, Birmingham City and Norwich interested, and Premier League sides also watching. Michael Carrick is understood to rate him highly, with a loan viewed as a pathway towards a first-team challenge in the 2027/28 season.

One youngster has already moved on. Winger Ethan Williams has completed a permanent switch to Peterborough United for a sizeable undisclosed fee, signing a long-term deal and taking the No10 shirt. The 20-year-old featured on United’s pre-season tour and scored in the 5-0 win over Rosenborg after loan spells with Falkirk and Cheltenham. He admitted it was the right moment to go, saying he had gained valuable experience in men’s football and felt the time had come to leave United and commit to Peterborough.

At left-back, United are also tracking Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. Barcelona are in the race, and Racing sporting director Chema Aragon has been clear: a £12m-plus bid has already been rejected, and the club will only sell for the 19-year-old’s €16m release clause. Salinas is under contract until 2029 after helping Racing win promotion to La Liga.

Old faces in new roles – and a keeper staking his claim

The summer has brought a familiar face back into the international spotlight. Former United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has been appointed France’s new goalkeeping coach, joining up with Zinedine Zidane in a reunion of the country’s golden generation. Barthez and Zidane lifted the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 together, with the ex-Monaco keeper winning 87 caps before retiring from international duty in 2006. Bruno Fernandes remains the heartbeat of United’s midfield and the centre of attention on and off the pitch.

At Croke Park, he came off the bench to a huge roar, saw one effort ruled out for offside and later rattled the crossbar. He then missed in the penalty shootout, though Noussair Mazraoui eventually converted the decisive kick in a 5-4 win. It was pre-season drama, but the bigger story is his future.

Juventus, AC Milan and Galatasaray are all reportedly interested as his contract runs into its final year. His deal runs until 2027, and the coming months will reveal whether United move to tie down their captain or face the prospect of losing one of their most influential players.

In the background, another midfield tug-of-war may be brewing. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, long admired at Old Trafford after last summer’s pursuit, is now on Newcastle’s radar, according to the Daily Mail. Newcastle are weighing up a move as they look for midfield reinforcements.
