Leeds United's Deal for Nico Elvedi Agreed – One Major Obstacle Ahead

Leeds United have a deal in place to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi – and yet, the transfer still hangs in the balance.

The club’s summer rebuild has been decisive so far. Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic and James Trafford have all arrived to arm Daniel Farke for the new Premier League campaign, with Leeds intent on doing far more than just surviving. Even so, the recruitment drive is not finished. Not at centre-back, not after Pascal Struijk’s departure.

Elvedi is the man they want to plug that gap. He is also a player Farke knows inside out.

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Leeds and Gladbach have agreed a fee of €10m (£8.5m), with a 15% sell-on clause heading back to the Bundesliga side. Personal terms with Elvedi were settled earlier in the week. On paper, every box is ticked.

Yet the transfer is still not signed off.

Bornauw's Future

The entire move is tied to the future of Sebastiaan Bornauw.

Bornauw, who joined Leeds from Wolfsburg, has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League, making just nine appearances. Hamburg have been strongly linked with a move for the Belgian, and Elvedi is viewed as his direct replacement in Farke’s squad. For now, though, there is no agreement for Bornauw to leave. Until that changes, Elvedi’s switch cannot be pushed over the line.

The uncertainty has already shaped Gladbach’s plans. Elvedi has been left out of their squad for the pre-season friendly against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, a precaution to avoid any injury that could derail the deal at the final hurdle. The message is clear: everyone is ready, but nobody can move first.

That decision underlines how serious the situation has become for both clubs. With neither Bornauw nor Elvedi available, Farke’s central defensive options are thin. Joe Rodon, new signing Muharemovic and Jaka Bijol are the only recognised centre-backs, while Ethan Ampadu and James Justin can cover if required. It is a workable group, but not the depth a Premier League manager wants going into a new season.

For Farke, Elvedi is not just another body in defence. He is a trusted lieutenant.

Before taking charge at Elland Road in 2023, Farke spent a season in the Bundesliga with Gladbach and worked closely with the Swiss international. Elvedi quickly became central to his plans, a defender the coach openly rated among the elite.

He once called Elvedi “one of the best defenders in Europe” when at his peak, and labelled him “an absolute leader for us.” Those are not the words of a manager signing a squad filler. They are the words of a coach who believes he is bringing in a cornerstone.

Leeds have the fee agreed, the contract ready, and a manager pushing for a reunion. Now it all comes down to one thing: will Bornauw move and unlock the deal before the new season kicks off?
