Leeds United Appeal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin's Goal Recognition

Leeds United have launched an appeal to reclaim a goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin after Monday night’s 4-1 win over Newcastle stirred up an unexpected post-match debate.

The flashpoint came in the 34th minute. James Justin whipped in a teasing cross, Calvert-Lewin rose to meet it and wheeled away believing he had headed Leeds into a 2-0 lead. Inside Elland Road, there was no doubt who the crowd thought had scored.

On the record, though, the story changed.

After a review, Jayden Bogle was credited with the goal, adjudged to have got the final touch. The decision left Calvert-Lewin stunned, especially as he later found out from the referee that the strike had officially been awarded to his team-mate rather than to him.

Calvert-Lewin did get on the scoresheet before the interval, adding Leeds’ third in first-half stoppage time, but the confusion over the earlier effort refused to die down.

The Premier League match centre later confirmed on X that the “goal accreditation panel adjudged Leeds’ 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal”, locking in the ruling — at least initially.

Leeds have now challenged that call. A second, separate panel will be convened to review the incident again and decide once and for all who gets their name on that 34th-minute strike.

For Calvert-Lewin, it is a question of personal recognition. For Leeds, it is about setting the record straight on a night when almost everything else went their way.
