Lamine Camara Focuses on Monaco After Chelsea Transfer Collapse

Lamine Camara insists he has “turned the page” on his collapsed move to Chelsea and is locking in on Monaco’s Ligue 1 campaign after a chaotic end to the transfer window.

The 22-year-old midfielder had undergone a medical ahead of a proposed £47.1m switch to Stamford Bridge, only for the transfer to fall apart in the final hours before the deadline.

Chelsea had already seen two offers rejected as Monaco held firm on their valuation. The stance softened late in the window, when the club lowered their asking price for Camara during a frantic spell in which their plans appeared to hinge on Folarin Balogun’s future.

For a brief period, Camara looked destined for the Premier League. Balogun’s move to Everton seemed in doubt, Monaco were weighing up which asset to cash in on, and the Senegal international suddenly sat at the centre of one of the window’s biggest deals.

Then the situation flipped again.

As Balogun’s transfer to Goodison Park appeared to be back on track, Monaco seemed to cool on the idea of losing Camara. By the time the window slammed shut, neither player had moved. Both stayed in the Principality, leaving Chelsea without their midfield target and Monaco with the major sale many in France believed they needed still unmade.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” Camara said ahead of Monaco’s game against Strasbourg on Saturday. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season.”

Inside the club, the message all summer had been clear: any departure for Camara would require a “substantial fee”. Sources in France had maintained Monaco were under pressure to bank at least one big sale and preferred to move Balogun on rather than their midfield cornerstone.

On the pitch, the noise has not knocked Monaco off stride. They opened the Ligue 1 season with three straight wins and went into the weekend second in the table, behind Rennes, with a game in hand.

That platform, Camara believes, is where his energy now belongs.

“I can help the team a lot,” the Senegal international said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

The Premier League door may have closed this summer. It has not locked.
