Kylian Mbappé's Career Choices: Liverpool or Paris?

Kylian Mbappé’s career has always felt inevitable. Monaco wonderkid, Paris superstar, Real Madrid galáctico. A straight line to the very top.

It was anything but.

Speaking to The Athletic, the 2018 World Cup winner revealed just how close he came to taking a very different route – one that would have dropped him into the heart of Anfield, not the Parc des Princes.

And it all started at home.

“My mum's favourite destination was Liverpool; she wanted me to go there,” Mbappé said. Back then he was still at AS Monaco, the most coveted teenager in Europe, weighing up the first giant step of his career. “There was a time, when I was at Monaco, when I had to make a decision and I was close to joining Liverpool.”

This wasn’t a casual flirtation. Liverpool, under Jürgen Klopp, were building something fierce and fast, a team that pressed high and ran harder than almost anyone in Europe. Mbappé’s family could see the fit. His mother, in particular, was sold.

“My mum was a big fan of Jürgen Klopp, and he's an amazing manager. I met him and I have a wonderful relationship with him. I have great respect for him.”

Picture it for a moment: Klopp in full flow, selling the Liverpool project, the energy of Anfield, the chance to lead a revival. Mbappé, still a teenager, already a phenomenon, listening as one of the game’s great motivators lays out a future in red.

The pull was strong. Just not strong enough.

“I didn't listen to (my mum),” Mbappé admitted. “I wanted to go to my city, Paris. I wanted to play in my own country. I didn't want to leave my country.”

That was the turning point. Emotion over logic. Home over adventure. Instead of walking out to “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” he chose the capital, the pressure, the expectation of carrying a club desperate for European glory.

PSG paid €180 million to bring him from Monaco, a fee that underlined the scale of the bet. Mbappé repaid it with numbers that now define an era.

Across seven seasons in Paris, he became the club’s all-time leading scorer: 256 goals in 308 matches. On top of that, 110 assists. A relentless stream of end product, week after week, as domestic titles and cups stacked up and his status as the face of French football hardened into fact.

He dominated Ligue 1, grew into a global icon and, eventually, earned the move he had dreamed of since childhood, to Real Madrid.

Yet the thought lingers. Mbappé under Klopp. Mbappé in the Premier League. Mbappé racing onto passes at Anfield with the Kop surging behind him.

It never happened. It came close. Close enough that his mother could see it, that Klopp could pitch it, that Liverpool could believe in it.

In the end, he chose Paris. And the rest of European football has been living with that decision ever since.
