Kylian Mbappé Leaves Nike for Landmark Deal with On Holding

Kylian Mbappé has drawn a bold line under almost 20 years with Nike, walking away from the American giant to sign a landmark deal with Swiss brand On Holding as it steps into professional football.

The Madrid forward had worn the Swoosh since he was eight. He rose from academy prospect to global superstar as one of Nike’s most powerful faces, sharing top billing with Cristiano Ronaldo and Vinicius Jr and fronting the Mercurial line that defined his speed-driven image.

That story is over. A new one starts in Switzerland.

From Mercurial to a new frontier

On built its reputation in running, not football. Its distinctive cushioned soles and minimalist aesthetic turned it into a disruptor in performance footwear. Now the company wants a piece of the world’s biggest sport, and it has chosen one of its most influential players to lead the charge.

The move mirrors a familiar path. Roger Federer ended his own long relationship with Nike to join forces with On in 2019, not just as an ambassador but as an investor and strategic partner. His collaboration produced a signature line and helped reposition the brand from niche runner’s choice to mainstream sports heavyweight.

Mbappé is expected to play a similar role – only this time, the battleground is football.

Contract clock runs out

The break became possible when Mbappé’s Nike deal expired on July 31. Even as the contract wound down, uncertainty lingered. The forward kept appearing in Nike campaigns, and the brand continued to feature him heavily across its channels, fuelling talk that a renewal might still be on the table.

It wasn’t. Once the paperwork ran its course, the Frenchman made his move.

“From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow's game,” Mbappé said in the official announcement.

“I want to bring my experience and perspective into what we create, push what's possible through innovation, and always stay true to the joy of football. We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”

End of an era with Nike

Nike’s backing tracked every step of Mbappé’s rise: academy prodigy, Monaco revelation, Paris Saint-Germain phenomenon, Madrid galáctico. Along the way he joined the ultra-elite group of players with their own named boots, a privilege reserved for the likes of Ronaldo at the very top of the endorsement pyramid.

Cutting ties after nearly two decades doesn’t just close a personal chapter. It redraws the map of football marketing.

Nike loses one of its most bankable young icons. On gains a headline act to spearhead its first serious move into the game, with Mbappé set to influence the design and development of the brand’s upcoming football range.

The boots he wears next won’t just carry his name. They’ll carry his fingerprints.
