Karim Benzema Not Joining Bayer Leverkusen

The 38-year-old, freshly released from his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, briefly sat at the centre of a swirl of transfer noise after DZfoot journalist Ilyes Kaddouri reported that Leverkusen executives had made direct contact with the Frenchman. The story lit up social media, fuelled by one small but powerful detail: the former Real Madrid star had started following Leverkusen’s official Instagram account.

For a few hours, the idea didn’t feel far-fetched. A recent Ballon d’Or winner, suddenly a free agent, linking up with one of Europe’s most exciting sides. The narrative almost wrote itself.

Leverkusen, though, shut it down in a single line.

Sporting director Simon Rolfes was approached by BILD about the possibility of signing the unattached striker. His answer left no room for interpretation: “Our squad is complete.” No teasing, no half-open doors. With that, the Benzema-to-Bayer fantasy was effectively over and the Bundesliga closed off as a destination for the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner.

Reports had suggested Benzema had already spoken with Leverkusen players Lucas Vazquez and Moussa Diaby, sounding out the project and the atmosphere around the club. The conversations, if they happened, clearly didn’t move the dial inside the BayArena offices.

Leverkusen’s hierarchy believe their attack is already loaded. Head coach Carles Martinez can lean on the experience of Patrik Schick as his reference point up front, while Christian Kofane offers a fresher, more dynamic option as he continues his rise. The picture will look even stronger once Victor Boniface finishes his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury and returns to the fold.

A sentimental return to Lyon, another storyline floated in recent days, has also been dismissed, closing off one more romantic twist in the late-career path of Benzema.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, have little time for distractions. They open their Europa League campaign at home to Slovenian side Celje on Wednesday evening, a chance to set the tone in Europe in front of their own fans. Four days later, RB Leipzig arrive at the BayArena in what already feels like a significant early Bundesliga test before the league pauses for the international break.

When domestic action resumes on October 10 with an away trip to Mainz on matchday five, Leverkusen expect to be sharper, deeper, and closer to full strength. Just not with Karim Benzema leading the line.
