Juventus' Goalkeepers: Vicario and Grabara Compete for No.1 Spot

Juventus’ goal has two new faces – and no guarantees.

The club cleared the decks in the summer, moving on Michele Di Gregorio and long‑serving deputy Mattia Perin, then diving into the market for not one, but two potential No.1s. Guglielmo Vicario arrived on loan from Tottenham, Kamil Grabara on loan from Wolfsburg. Both had been tracked for a while. Both were identified as solutions to a position Juventus no longer wanted to leave to chance.

For now, Vicario has the gloves. He has started strongly and looks every inch a first-choice goalkeeper. But he also knows the reality: his status is anything but untouchable.

Spalletti’s message: no one is safe

Luciano Spalletti spent last season sending a clear signal with his selections. He rotated goalkeepers. He benched big names. Reputation did not protect anyone. That approach now hangs over the new hierarchy in Turin.

If Vicario’s level drops, Grabara is not there to make up the numbers. The Poland international has been brought in with the expectation of playing. Spalletti has already shown he will not hesitate to change his goalkeeper if performances dip, and Grabara can reasonably expect minutes if the man ahead of him stumbles.

So far, there has been no opening. Vicario has been assured and consistent between the posts, the kind of presence that calms a back line and buys time in a new environment. On this form, he keeps the shirt.

But the pressure is permanent. Grabara is close behind, training with the clear intention of turning competition into a genuine threat. Every save in training, every command of his area, is another reminder to Vicario that the margin for error is thin.

This is exactly the tension Juventus wanted. Two keepers, both on loan, both with something to prove, both aware that Spalletti will pick on merit and on the demands of each specific match.

It also allows the coach to raise the bar. With no automatic starter, he can demand intensity and focus every week, then choose the profile he prefers for a given opponent – whether that’s distribution under pressure, dominance in the air, or pure shot-stopping.

Vicario has already addressed the duel, and his words hint at a rivalry built on respect rather than friction. Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, the Tottenham loanee highlighted Grabara’s pedigree.

“We all know each other more or less, I remember his great season in the Champions League with Copenhagen. He's a strong, quality goalkeeper. There's healthy competition between us, as it should be.”

It is the kind of comment that underlines the mood in the dressing room: sharp competition, no bitterness.

Vicario wants to cement himself as Spalletti’s undisputed first choice. Grabara plans to make that as difficult as possible. Between them, they may just give Juventus the most unforgiving – and productive – battle on the pitch this season.
