Julian Alvarez's Transfer Standoff: Atletico Madrid Blocks Barcelona Move

Julian Alvarez has not reported for Atletico Madrid training since being told, behind closed doors, that the club will block any move to Barcelona – leaving Arsenal as his only realistic escape route.

Sources have told BBC Sport that Atletico informed Alvarez and his representatives earlier this week that they will not enter negotiations with the Catalan side for the Argentina striker. The message was clear, and it was private. Alvarez’s response has been public: he has missed two consecutive training sessions, citing illness.

Atletico have backed up their internal stance with a very deliberate external one. Within 24 hours, the La Liga club issued two statements insisting Alvarez will not be allowed to complete the transfer he wants to Barca. The door to Camp Nou is shut, and Atletico want everyone to know it.

Yet another door remains open.

Atletico are prepared to sell Alvarez to Arsenal and have already held direct talks with the Premier League champions over what would be one of the standout deals of the summer window. Atleti director Mateu Alemany travelled to London last week and, during meetings with Arsenal officials, made it clear the Spanish club would demand 150m euros (£128m).

Mikel Arteta is pushing hard. He wants Alvarez this month. But the forward’s firm preference for Barcelona has stalled Arsenal’s move, creating a stand-off in which the player’s desire collides with his club’s refusal.

Even so, discussions between Atletico and Arsenal over a club-to-club agreement are described as positive. The framework is there. If Alvarez changes course and gives Arsenal the green light in the coming days, those involved expect the deal to accelerate quickly.

The tension escalated on Wednesday when Barcelona president Joan Laporta publicly underlined his club’s continued interest in Alvarez. Atletico hit back instantly with a blunt statement: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”

On Thursday, the Atletico board went even further, issuing a second statement: “The members of Atletico de Madrid's board of directors have unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club's decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona.”

The message from Madrid could hardly be louder. The question now is whether Alvarez is willing to swap his Barcelona dream for Arsenal’s offer – or keep sitting out training while the clock keeps ticking.
