The long-running Julian Alvarez transfer saga is beginning to leave scars well beyond the pitch.

The Atletico Madrid forward is now seriously weighing up a split from his long-time agent Fernando Hidalgo, according to Onda Cero. Hidalgo has been by Alvarez’s side for his entire professional career, but the storm whipped up by Atletico, Barcelona and the player’s entourage has reportedly shattered the trust that once held that relationship together.

Agent shake-up on the horizon

Alvarez has already taken a first step. He is said to have held initial talks with The Elegant Game, the agency headed by former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore. It would not be an unfamiliar environment. The firm already looks after Enzo Fernandez, a close friend and Argentina teammate, a detail that could smooth any transition for the unsettled striker.

Inside the Metropolitano, patience with Alvarez’s current representation has run thin. Atletico’s hierarchy firmly believes the confusion around a possible move to Barcelona – and the tension that followed in contract talks – spiralled because of external meddling.

CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has been particularly blunt about where he thinks the problem lies. He did not just question the handling of negotiations; he questioned the impact on the player himself.

“Julian is really in a bad way. There have been people who have taken it upon themselves to deceive him, to confuse him,” Gil Marin said, laying bare the club’s frustration with the forces surrounding the 24-year-old.

Fractured bond with the fans

All of this comes as Alvarez’s situation on the pitch deteriorates. His relationship with the Atletico fanbase is close to breaking point. He arrived with weighty expectations, but recent weeks have brought boos and whistles, fuelled by his apparent desire to engineer a move away.

The signs are there for everyone to see: tense body language, visible frustration, and a recurring dash straight down the tunnel when left on the bench. Those reactions have not gone unnoticed in the dressing room, piling extra strain on Diego Simeone as he tries to manage not only a tactical puzzle, but an emotional one.

Simeone must now work out how – or even if – he can reintegrate a forward whose head seems far from clear and whose every touch at home is greeted with suspicion.

Limited minutes, growing noise

On the field, Alvarez’s contribution has shrunk as the noise around him has grown. He has managed just three appearances in all competitions for Atletico this season. Only once has he made a direct impact: a solitary assist in a 2-1 Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

For a player of his pedigree, that is a lean return. For a club chasing trophies on multiple fronts, it is a problem.

Those closest to Alvarez believe the root of that problem lies in how his career has been steered off the pitch. Mundo Deportivo reports that family and confidants have been urging him for some time to walk away from Hidalgo, convinced the agent has mishandled a crucial phase of his career and his affairs away from the game.

A definitive decision has not yet been made. But the ground is clearly shifting.

Derby storm approaching

The timing could hardly be worse for Atletico. The club is preparing for the visit of Real Madrid in Sunday’s derby, a fixture that rarely needs extra drama. Simeone’s side sit third in La Liga on 13 points, just two behind their city rivals in second, with the chance to tighten the title race early in the season.

Instead of a calm build-up, they face a week dominated by questions over a disillusioned striker, an angry fanbase, and an agent on the brink of being cut loose.

The ball will roll at the Metropolitano on Sunday. The real question is whether Julian Alvarez will still feel like an Atletico Madrid player when it does – or whether this is the beginning of the end of his time in red and white.
