“The situation is very clear, the entity took a decision that Miguel Ángel explained very well,” Simeone said in South Korea, a message he repeated directly to Álvarez in their latest exchange.

For Atletico, this is not a dressing-room debate. It is a corporate decision. And the board has drawn a red line: they will not sell Álvarez to a direct rival in Spain, despite the player’s preference for Barcelona and strong interest from Arsenal and PSG.

Club closes ranks

Álvarez’s agents are in Madrid, pushing to find a way out. Atletico’s response has been to close ranks.
