Julián Álvarez's Escape Route: Arsenal's Bid Amidst Barcelona Blockade

Julián Álvarez has been left with one realistic escape route from Atlético Madrid this summer – and it does not run through Barcelona.

The Spanish club have shut that door, bolted it, and thrown away the key. Arsenal, watching closely with five days left in the window, suddenly look like the only viable path out. The complications, though, stretch far beyond the pitch.

Barcelona blocked, tension rising

According to Spanish newspaper "Marca", Atlético have taken an uncompromising stance. Citing club sources, they report that the Madrid side refuse outright to sell Álvarez to Barcelona. Inside the club, the line is clear: the chances of him joining Barça are "equal to zero".

Álvarez has responded with absence. The Argentine has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, still clinging to the hope of forcing a move to the Camp Nou. If that was meant to soften Atlético’s position, it has had the opposite effect.

Joan Laporta had insisted Barcelona would push until the final hours of the window to land the striker. Instead, every public sign from Madrid has hardened. Atlético’s board released a statement backing the decision not to sell to the Catalans, and the relationship between the two clubs has grown increasingly strained.

With the domestic route blocked, Atlético have drawn a different line in the sand: they are prepared to sell Álvarez abroad, but only for 150 million euros.

A fractured bond in Madrid

The sense that Álvarez’s time in the Spanish capital is running out predates this stand-off.

Doubts over his future intensified after a flashpoint against Villarreal. Sections of the Atlético support turned on their own star, jeering him, and Álvarez headed straight to the dressing room alone at full-time. It felt like a break in the bond between player and crowd, the kind of moment that often precedes a parting of ways.

From that point, a move became a question of where, not if. Barcelona looked like the natural destination. Atlético have now removed that option from the table.

Which is where Arsenal step in.

Arsenal’s opening – and a different kind of obstacle

The Premier League club have shown strong interest and are viewed as the most realistic destination if Álvarez does leave. The Argentine is attracted by their sporting project, and Arsenal believe a deal can be done before the window closes on 1 September.

But the biggest hurdle may not be the fee. It may be paperwork.

Álvarez’s family live with him in Spain. Any move to London would mean navigating British immigration rules that have tightened since Brexit. That makes residency and visa procedures for his relatives more complex, especially as some of their previous permits from his earlier spell in England have already expired.

One case looks more straightforward. Journalist Verónica Brunati has explained that Álvarez’s wife can obtain residency in the United Kingdom as the dependent partner of someone holding a work visa, which would allow her to live with him legally if he joins Arsenal.

That leaves the rest of the family and the clock.

Arsenal are confident they can manage the visa process for Álvarez’s relatives if the player commits to the move and Atlético accept a foreign bid. For now, though, they have not placed a decisive official offer on the table in Madrid.

The stalemate with Barcelona is total. The path to London is open but complicated. With the window ticking down, the question is no longer who wants Julián Álvarez – it is whether anyone can actually get him out.
