Julian Alvarez Faces Hostile Reception at Atletico Madrid
Julian Alvarez’s return to Atletico Madrid’s home turf turned hostile on Sunday, as the forward was drowned in jeers from his own supporters amid his push to leave the club.
The 26-year-old, determined to force a move away from the Spanish capital this summer, has been heavily linked with Premier League champions Arsenal and Barcelona. Atletico’s stance, though, has remained firm: he is not for sale. The standoff is now playing out in public.
All afternoon, the build-up circled around one question: would Alvarez feature in Atletico’s first home match of the season against Villarreal? His name on the bench answered that, but it did nothing to cool the tension.
The atmosphere turned the moment he began his warm-up. Boos rolled down from the stands, a clear message from a fanbase that feels betrayed. When Alvarez finally entered the pitch in the 66th minute, the noise intensified into a wall of whistles, cutting through the stadium as he crossed the white line.
He joined the action with Atletico wobbling. Marc Pubill had given the hosts the lead, but Gerard Moreno’s penalty around the hour mark had dragged Villarreal level. The visitors then tightened their grip. A second spot-kick, this time from Georges Mikautadze, flipped the game on its head and left Atletico staring at defeat.
The late drama came from another Argentinian – but not the one under the spotlight all week. With five minutes to play, Giuliano Simeone stepped up to salvage a point, his goal dragging Atletico back to 2-2 and sparing them an opening home loss.
For Alvarez, there was no such redemption. At full-time, while his team-mates stayed out to acknowledge the crowd, he turned his back on the ritual. Visibly unimpressed with the treatment he had received, he headed straight down the tunnel, chased by another round of jeers.
The scoreboard showed a draw. The relationship between Alvarez and the Atletico fans looked far closer to breaking point.
