Julian Alvarez Faces Atletico Madrid Frustration Amid Transfer Speculation

Julian Alvarez felt the full force of Atletico Madrid’s frustration on Sunday, whistled and booed on a tense return to action against Villarreal as speculation over a move to Arsenal rumbled on in the background.

Back in Diego Simeone’s squad after being left out of the midweek win over Malaga to rebuild fitness following his post-World Cup final break, the Argentina forward was named among the substitutes at the Metropolitano. His name over the tannoy drew jeers before a ball had even been kicked.

Pressed on the supporters’ anger and whether he had a message for them, Simeone drew a line.

“No, I’m not in a position to give advice to the fans,” he replied. “I think I need to focus on my work, which is to give my best on the sporting side for the good of Atletico de Madrid.

“The only thing I know is that if Atletico de Madrid wants to win a title, we have to be united. We need forwards, and we need important forwards. For that, of course, we all have to work in that direction to give the team what it needs.”

Unity feels a long way off where Alvarez is concerned. The striker has been open about his desire to join Barcelona this summer, a stance that has jarred with many Atletico fans. LaLiga’s champions, though, are now reported to have shifted their attention elsewhere, cooling the prospect of a move to Camp Nou.

That change has altered the landscape. Arsenal, long linked with a late swoop, have been handed fresh encouragement that a Premier League return for Alvarez could yet be engineered before the transfer deadline.

Whether Sunday’s bruising cameo was his final act in an Atletico shirt now hangs over the club’s season like a storm cloud.
