Jude Bellingham's Journey from Birmingham to Stardom

Jude Bellingham was barely old enough to drive when he started bending Birmingham City’s future out of shape.

At 16 years and 38 days, a local kid from the West Midlands walked out for the Blues and became their youngest-ever first-team player. From that moment, there was no hiding him. Scouts were circling, stories were spreading, and Birmingham knew the secret was out.

He played just 44 games for the club. One season. That was all it took before the bags were packed and the ticket to Germany was stamped. Borussia Dortmund called, and in the summer of 2020 Birmingham made a decision that stunned the wider game: they retired his shirt.

For a teenager with fewer than 50 senior appearances, it looked excessive to many on the outside. Inside St Andrew’s, it felt like recognition. They understood what they had just lost – and what he was about to become.

Bellingham has since grown into the heartbeat of England’s midfield, amassing 56 caps and 13 goals by the 2026 World Cup. At club level, he has turned into a global superstar at Real Madrid, a central figure at the Santiago Bernabeu and one of the faces of the modern game.

He is still only 23.

So the question lingers in Birmingham: could the prodigal son ever come home? Maybe when he hits 30, when the miles on the clock start to show and Birmingham, backed by an ambitious board that includes NFL icon Tom Brady, have fought their way back and nailed down a place in the Premier League?

Steve Bruce, who knows the club inside out as both player and manager, isn’t expecting any quick reunion. Speaking to GOAL via Free Bets, he cut straight to the point.

“Jude back at Birmingham? I don't think that's going to be for a long, long time, I have to say.

“But look, to retire his shirt just tells you something about him. We were all aware that there was this kid at Birmingham who was 12, 13 years old and ripping it up. He's a fantastic player who's playing for arguably the biggest club in the world at the moment. Further down the line, you never know.”

That last line is what keeps the dream alive. Further down the line.

Clinton Morrison, another former Birmingham favourite, has already entertained the idea of Bellingham retracing his steps, especially with plans for a new stadium adding to the sense of a club trying to reinvent itself.

“Well, maybe. You never know. But at the moment he’s playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world in Real Madrid,” Morrison told GOAL. “I think Jude Bellingham comes back to Birmingham one day - you never know, because Birmingham have the financial ambition to go to a different level. That’s what Birmingham City fans would love.

“But not at this moment in time. He’s playing at Real Madrid, a huge football club. And later on in his career, if Jude Bellingham decides he wants to come back to his old club, he’ll always be welcomed at Birmingham City. The kid was a sensation for the club even at a young age. But yeah, I think that could happen one day, just not now.”

For that fantasy to edge towards reality, Morrison is clear: Birmingham have to do their part.

“It just depends, doesn’t it? You never know. He’s still at a decent age. Birmingham have to get to the Premier League first. They need to get there and then be in the Premier League. And then, even then, you’ve got consolidation. It’s so different from the Championship. You can have all the money in the world, but if the players aren’t gelling or you don’t have the right manager, you’re going to struggle.

“So I think Jude’s focus will be on staying at Real Madrid for as long as possible. And if it comes when he gets to 30, 31, 32 and he wants to come home - I’m sure Birmingham City will take Jude Bellingham back.”

For now, Birmingham’s No.22 hangs in permanent tribute, a reminder of the teenager who outgrew the club in a single season. Whether that empty shirt one day has its owner back in the building depends on two journeys: one of a superstar chasing trophies in Madrid, and one of a club fighting just to stand on the same stage again.
