John Obi Mikel Supports Adam Wharton for Manchester United Move

John Obi Mikel has nailed his colours to the mast over Adam Wharton’s future – and he’s painted the midfielder in Manchester United red.

The former Chelsea and Nigeria star believes the Crystal Palace talent is destined for Old Trafford, predicting a move as early as next year.

“I love him! I love Adam Wharton, I'm a big, big fan,” Mikel said on his podcast, hailing the 22-year-old’s rise. “I think he's going to go places, though, I think next season he will leave Crystal Palace. I think they want to keep him for one more season. I see him going to Manchester United next season.”

High praise. Big prediction. But it clashes sharply with the reality of United’s current transfer plan.

United looked, then walked away

Wharton, valued at around £60 million by Transfermarkt, stayed put at Selhurst Park during the summer window despite attracting interest from several clubs. United were among the admirers. They watched, they scouted, they discussed. They never bid.

INEOS chose a different route for Michael Carrick’s midfield rebuild. Instead of going all-in on Wharton, they spread the investment across three signings: Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans. The trio cost a combined £148 million in upfront fees and effectively reset the engine room.

That level of outlay changes the picture. United now look stocked in central areas, with Wharton slipping from potential marquee signing to something closer to a luxury option.

Midfield dream, defensive reality

The romantic idea of Wharton strolling into Carrick’s side next season runs into one blunt truth: United’s money is expected to go elsewhere.

Inside the club, the expectation is that INEOS will pivot hard towards the defence in the next major window. They chose not to add a single defender over the summer, a decision that raised eyebrows given the demands of a campaign that includes Champions League football.

One serious injury at the back and that gamble could bite. The squad’s balance leaves Carrick exposed if his first-choice defenders suffer any significant absence, and that risk is shaping future recruitment thinking.

So while Mikel talks up a midfield star in waiting, United’s hierarchy are staring at their backline and seeing a far more urgent problem.

Lewis Hall lined up as long-term priority

That shift in focus is already visible in the club’s longer-term planning.

As it stands, United’s priority signing for 2027 is believed to be Lewis Hall. The young left-sided defender is viewed internally as the ideal successor to Luke Shaw, who is now 31 and entering the final nine months of his contract at Old Trafford.

It’s a clear signal. The left flank of United’s defence is being mapped out years in advance, while the midfield – after heavy investment – is not expected to be the main area of spending in the near future.

So where does that leave Wharton?

For now, as one of the Premier League’s most intriguing young midfielders, learning his trade at Crystal Palace, building his reputation, and drawing admiring glances from some of the game’s biggest names.

Mikel Obi is convinced he’ll end up in Manchester. The question is whether United’s evolving blueprint has room for him when – or if – that moment finally comes.
