Manchester United are fighting to keep hold of one of the most gifted teenagers in their academy, with 15-year-old striker JJ Gabriel moving towards the exit door at Old Trafford.

Pathway to the First Team

The pathway to the first team appeared clear. He made his senior debut in pre-season, coming off the bench in United’s friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm last month. Last week, he marked his Uefa Youth League debut with a hat-trick, an emphatic statement on a European stage. Internally, there was an expectation he would make his competitive bow in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.

Then, the mood changed.

Gabriel did not train with Michael Carrick’s squad at the end of last week. The club have not publicly detailed the reasons, but the situation is understood to stem from issues in the relationship between Gabriel’s family and Manchester United. Those tensions have escalated to the point where the player has now sent a formal notice requesting the immediate cancellation of his registration.

United can challenge that request, and the scale of the club’s response shows how seriously they are taking the threat of losing him. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are personally involved in talks with Gabriel’s family, an unusually high-level intervention for a player who has not yet turned 16. Inside the club, there is still hope that a resolution can be found.

Privately, United sources admit they are unsure how the situation has deteriorated so quickly. From fast-tracked appearances and individual awards to legal notices and stand-offs, the shift has been abrupt.

Gabriel’s Age and Future

Gabriel’s age adds another layer of complexity. He does not turn 16 until 6 October, the point at which he would be eligible to sign a scholarship agreement. For now, his contract runs only until the end of the season, a ticking clock that sharpens the stakes for both sides.

Born in London, Gabriel arrived at United with a reputation as a natural finisher. The club then watched him justify every bit of that hype, climbing through age groups, deciding big youth matches, and looking entirely at home whenever the bar was raised. The plan was simple: keep pushing, keep developing, and eventually hand him a competitive first-team debut.

Instead, United now find themselves trying to convince a 15-year-old not to walk away from one of the most famous academies in world football, just as his senior career was about to begin.
