JJ Gabriel Moves Closer to Barcelona Amid Man Utd Exit Talks

JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread – and the teenager is now in Barcelona, holding talks over a move to the Spanish champions.

United have been braced for this moment. On August 13, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed the club had growing concerns about keeping the highly rated attacker, with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona all circling.

The situation escalated a month later. On September 15, Gabriel formally informed United that he wants to leave. Sources confirmed the 15-year-old has sent an official notice requesting his academy registration be cancelled with immediate effect, a move that would make him a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.

That birthday, on October 6, is crucial. Gabriel holds an Irish passport, opening the door to a switch to an EU club once he hits 16 – and the European giants know it.

Contract standoff with United

United, though, are not simply stepping aside. Gabriel’s academy registration runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, giving the club a strong contractual position.

Bailey underlined the complexity of the case, noting that while Gabriel has formally asked for his registration to be cancelled, United retain the right to challenge that request. ESPN reported this week that the club have no intention of tearing up the agreement.

Behind the scenes, United have been trying to change his mind. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the club planned talks with Gabriel, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in efforts to convince the youngster to stay.

The pressure finally told – but not in United’s favour.

Barcelona move gathers pace

On Friday, Bailey revealed that both Real Madrid and Barcelona had already held positive discussions with Gabriel’s camp. Now the story has moved from theory to tarmac.

Manchester Evening News’ Chief Manchester United Correspondent, Tyrone Marshall, reported on X at 3:19pm on September 18: “JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp. United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc”.

Just 26 minutes later, Marshall sharpened the picture: “JJ Gabriel closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered. In Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today. Reports in Spain suggest he will get the EU passport he needs next week #mufc”.

That EU passport is a potential game-changer. It would smooth any move to La Liga and give Barcelona or Real Madrid a clearer pathway to sign him once he turns 16.

Spanish outlet Marca, which leans towards Real Madrid, has also confirmed Gabriel’s presence in Barcelona, while journalist Ben Jacobs backed up the story, writing on X at 3:23pm: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”

So the lines are drawn. United intend to reject his deregistration request. Gabriel is already in Barcelona. His 16th birthday, and a possible FIFA-approved move to Spain, looms on October 6.
