James Ward-Prowse Returns to Southampton

James Ward-Prowse is back where it all began.

Southampton have re-signed their former captain from Championship rivals West Ham United, bringing the 31-year-old midfielder home on a two-year deal at St Mary’s. The fee is understood to be just under £1m – a modest price for a player who once defined the club’s modern era.

Ward-Prowse left Saints in 2023 for West Ham and went on to make 75 appearances for the Hammers. His time away from the south coast turned into a tour of English football: a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, then another at Burnley, where he played 14 times last season.

Now the circle closes.

“It feels a bit surreal,” Ward-Prowse admitted. “The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I'm delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special.

“It's the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight.

“It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be.

“I'm here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Those words carry weight at a club where his story is stitched into the fabric. Ward-Prowse joined Southampton at the age of eight, rose through the academy and became the standard-bearer for a generation of homegrown talent. Before his departure, he racked up 410 first-team appearances, captaining the side and driving them through some of their most turbulent Premier League years.

His numbers underline that influence. For Saints, he scored 55 goals and provided 52 assists, a remarkable return for a central midfielder. Seventeen of those goals came from Premier League free-kicks, leaving him just one behind David Beckham’s all-time top-flight record of 18.

Beyond club level, Ward-Prowse has been capped 11 times by England, scoring twice for his country.

Southampton now get back not just a familiar face, but a set-piece specialist, a leader and a player who knows every inch of St Mary’s. The fee is small. The expectations will not be.
