Ismail Kartal Stays: Fenerbahce's Coach After Resignation Drama

Ismail Kartal is still Fenerbahce’s head coach. The club made that crystal clear on Friday night, drawing a firm line under 24 hours of chaos that had thrown the dugout into doubt.

An official statement from the hierarchy confirmed Kartal would remain in charge of the first team. Any lingering uncertainty evaporated on Saturday morning when the club’s social media channels pushed out fresh images of the 62-year-old back on the pitch, directing first-team training as if nothing had happened.

It had looked anything but routine on Thursday.

In the raw aftermath of Fenerbahce’s 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League, Kartal stunned Turkish football. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, he announced he was walking away.

He praised his players first.

“First of all, I congratulate my players for carrying out the tasks I assigned for tonight's match to the letter. We played football worthy of the Champions League. We could have won the match; we had clear chances. The match ended in a draw, and I am proud of my players,” he said.

Then came the bombshell.

“Tonight, I am resigning from my position - never to return. I extend my heartfelt thanks to my players.”

The words hit like a thunderclap. A Champions League night, a battling draw against Roma, and suddenly the man on the touchline was gone. Or so it seemed.

Reports quickly surfaced claiming crisis talks with club official Oguz Cetin had broken down. The narrative was clear: Kartal had had enough.

Inside the club, though, president Aziz Yildirim moved fast.

In a separate press conference shortly after Kartal’s outburst, Yildirim not only defended his coach but flatly rejected the resignation. He pointed directly at the atmosphere around the team and the treatment Kartal had received.

“You saw the state Ismail was in. Can a person endure that much distress?” Yildirim said. “They threw a water bottle at Ismail Kartal's head. We saw it. That is why he is upset. Ismail Kartal remains in his post. I said [to Kartal]: ‘You will continue,’ and that was that.”

The message was blunt. The president was standing behind his coach, and the resignation was being treated as an emotional reaction rather than a formal departure.

By Friday evening, the club’s official line matched the president’s stance. Kartal stays. Full stop.

Pressure shifts back to the pitch

Now the drama moves from the press room to the pitch.

Fenerbahce host Gaziantep FK on Monday night in the Super Lig, and the stakes are uncomfortably high. European performances have brought pride, but the domestic picture is far less flattering: Fenerbahce sit 11th in an 18-team league, far below expectations for a club of this size and ambition.

The equation is simple. They need three points.

A win would not solve everything, but it would cool the temperature around Kartal, ease internal tension and give frustrated supporters something tangible to cling to after a turbulent week. Another slip, though, and the noise that almost pushed the coach out the door may roar back even louder.
