Iraola Highlights Liverpool's Need for More Than Wingers

Liverpool’s summer has felt long, restless, and only half-finished.

Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz were through the door early, business done with minimal fuss. Ronald Araujo followed on loan from Barcelona a couple of weeks ago, a headline arrival to stiffen the back line.

Now the gaze has moved up the pitch.

Liverpool have agreed a £120m deal with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, a statement move aimed squarely at refreshing the attack. At the same time, the club have seen offers knocked back for Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr in recent days, a clear sign that wide options are very much on the agenda.

But that is only half the story.

Midfield Gap Still Glaring

While the forward line is being reshaped, the midfield remains the unsolved problem. It was the soft centre of last season’s failed title defence, and nothing in this window has truly addressed it.

If anything, it has worsened. Curtis Jones has gone, sold to Inter Milan in a £30m deal, leaving Andoni Iraola with even fewer options in the middle of the pitch.

The consequences were on show immediately. Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle United on the opening weekend underlined the same old frailties: a midfield that can’t quite control games, can’t quite protect, and can’t quite impose itself for 90 minutes.

Five days remain in the window. The clock is loud now.

“We Need Players in the Wide Areas” – But Not Only There

Facing the media before Liverpool’s clash with Nottingham Forest, Iraola was pressed on what comes next. Are more signings realistic in the final stretch of the window?

“There are certain things we can but it's true we need players in the wide areas,” he admitted, laying out the obvious priority.

Then he widened the lens.

“I'm sure if we can improve other areas we will but I don't know how the market is going to finish. I have to be patient as well as you.”

It was an honest snapshot of a coach working inside a moving market, trying to prepare for matches while his squad list might still change by the hour.

“It's very uncomfortable for me as you are dealing with uncertainties all the time. In four or five days we will know what we have and then we can make proper plans.”

The message was clear: yes, wingers are needed. But if an opportunity arises to strengthen elsewhere, especially in that fragile midfield, Iraola wants the club ready to move.

Decision Time for Liverpool’s Hierarchy

Iraola has drawn the outline of what he believes Liverpool need. He has highlighted the flanks, acknowledged other weak spots, and accepted the unease of waiting.

Now the responsibility shifts upstairs.

With the window closing in less than a week, the onus is on the Liverpool hierarchy and sporting director Richard Hughes to turn a patchy, unbalanced squad into one capable of sustaining a title push.

The coach has been blunt about the gaps. The market is still open. The question now is whether Liverpool act with the urgency their season already seems to demand.
