Inter Targets Tottenham's Djed Spence for Defensive Reinforcement

Inter have stepped up their hunt for a new full-back by launching a formal bid for Tottenham defender Djed Spence, with the player already giving the move his approval.

The Italian side have tabled an offer worth over €30 million for the 25-year-old, according to Fabrizio Romano, as they look to reinforce Christian Chivu’s back line. It is a statement move from the Nerazzurri and a clear sign they see Spence as a key part of their next defensive cycle.

Spence, once a standout at Nottingham Forest and fresh from enhancing his reputation on the international stage with England, has slipped down the order at Spurs under Roberto De Zerbi. Despite his profile, he finds himself behind several rivals and short of meaningful minutes in north London.

The pressure on his situation has finally produced a breakthrough. Per GiveMeSport, Spence has reached full agreement on personal terms with Inter and has given the green light to a return to Serie A, where he previously had a loan spell with Genoa. He wants the move. Inter want the move. Now the clubs have to find common ground.

That is where the tension lies. Tottenham are holding out for more. While Inter’s opening proposal of around €30m (£25.6m) is substantial, Spurs are understood to be demanding at least €35m (£30m) plus performance-related add-ons. His potential exit comes in the middle of a sweeping rebuild of the Spurs defence. The club have already brought in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke in this window, reshaping the back line around De Zerbi’s demands. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro has also signed a new long-term contract, further nailing down his place and squeezing Spence’s route to regular football.

Right now, Robertson, Destiny Udogie and Porro all sit ahead of Spence in the full-back pecking order. For a player in his mid‑twenties, with momentum and international standing to protect, a move abroad looks less like a gamble and more like a necessity.

Inter were not alone in tracking his situation. Manchester United and Liverpool both featured in the rumour mill at different stages of the summer. Yet that chase quickly thinned out. Romano has clarified that Liverpool’s supposed push was exaggerated and that talks between the parties never advanced to a serious stage, clearing the path for Inter.
