Inter Milan Secures Federico Dimarco Amid Barcelona Interest

Inter Milan have slammed the door on Barcelona’s late push for Federico Dimarco and are now racing to tie down the full-back on a long-term deal running to 2030.

The Catalan club’s attempt to prise him away in the final days of the transfer window shook the Italian champions. Talks even went as far as a proposed swap: Dimarco to Barcelona, Alejandro Balde to Inter. The idea was floated, discussed – and then dropped.

That brief flirtation was enough to set off alarms at San Siro. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter have responded by accelerating plans for a new contract that would keep the Italy international in Milan for most of the next decade.

Dimarco, 28, is currently under contract until 2027, with an option for a further year. Inter chose not to trigger that option over the summer, a decision that surprised the player after a standout season.

“I was expecting the club to call me to talk to me after what I did last year,” he admitted recently, laying bare his frustration.

Madrid meeting changes the tone

The turning point came away from home. As reported in Italy, Inter finally moved decisively in Madrid, on the eve of their Champions League clash with Real.

New sporting director Dario Baccin met Arturo Canales, Dimarco’s agent, in the Spanish capital. That summit is expected to fast-track negotiations over an extension, with discussions framed around the defender’s current salary of 4 million euros net.

It is a significant wage, but Inter view it as the going rate for a player widely regarded as one of the leading left-backs in the game right now.

Barcelona, though, are not walking away from the situation. They are watching closely as the talks progress.

Hansi Flick has only one recognised left-back in his squad, Alejandro Balde, and the youngster does not currently sit at the heart of the coach’s plans. That leaves a glaring hole on the left side of Barcelona’s defence.

Dimarco ticks the boxes: proven quality, tactical maturity, and a career at its peak rather than still in formation. Exactly the profile Barcelona lack.

Inter know it. Barcelona know it. The race now is not to sign Dimarco, but to see whether Inter can shut the door completely before the next window creaks open.
