Inter Milan Eye Federico Chiesa After Curtis Jones Deal

Inter Milan have already taken one player from Liverpool this week. They may not be finished yet.

Curtis Jones completed his move to San Siro on Friday, a deal that could climb to £30 million and marks the end of his Liverpool story at 25. Inter have their midfielder. Now they are circling a winger.

From Juve star to Liverpool fringe

Federico Chiesa arrived at Anfield in 2024 with weighty expectations and a modest fee by modern standards: around £12.5m from Juventus. On paper, it looked smart – a Euro 2020 winner, still in his prime, on a reported £150,000 per week.

The reality has been far less rewarding.

Chiesa leaves Merseyside, for now at least, as a Premier League title winner, but only in the loosest sense. His contribution has been bit-part, his role reduced, his influence limited. He has not convinced successive managers, and Andoni Iraola appears no different.

Pre-season has not changed that picture. The 28-year-old has failed to win over the new Liverpool boss and now stands near the exit door, provided the club’s valuation is met.

Inter’s plan after Luis Henrique

That opening may come from Serie A. Inter are preparing to sell Brazilian forward Luis Henrique to Roma for around €25m, a move that would free up both funds and a squad slot for Cristian Chivu.

The obvious question in Milan: who comes in next?

According to Inter reporter Fabio Bergomi, the answer could be Chiesa. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Bergomi suggested the Italy international has been earmarked as a direct replacement for Luis Henrique, if the Roma deal is finalised.

“Chiesa could be the one who goes in place of Luis Henrique, if Luis Henrique accepts Roma, as seems to be the case,” he said, adding that he would “narrow it down to Chiesa” as a plausible option for Inter.

The logic is clear. Inter are cashing in on one wide attacker and scanning the market for a relatively affordable, experienced alternative who knows Serie A inside out. Chiesa fits that profile.

Injuries, doubts and a stalled Anfield spell

On the pitch, the numbers tell their own story. Last season under Arne Slot, Chiesa managed only two Premier League starts and failed to make a compelling case in either. For a player of his pedigree, that is a stark drop-off.

His current absence from Liverpool training, ahead of the 20-time English champions’ opener against Newcastle, has only fuelled speculation about his future. Yet that gap has been put down to another injury setback rather than any active move to push through a transfer.

Still, the pattern is hard to ignore. Limited minutes. Persistent fitness issues. A manager unconvinced. A wage packet that no longer matches his status in the squad.

A Liverpool-Inter double?

Inter have already tested Liverpool’s resolve once and succeeded with the Jones deal. The relationship between the clubs is warm, the lines of communication open, and the Italian champions know exactly where to look if they want to complete a double raid.

For Chiesa, the prospect is obvious: a return to Serie A, a fresh start, and a coach in Chivu who needs a wide player and understands how to use one. For Liverpool, it would be a chance to move on a high earner who has slipped down the pecking order under Iraola.

The pieces are on the board. Inter have made their first move with Jones. Whether they now push to bring Chiesa back to Italy will tell plenty about how both clubs see the next phase of their rebuilds.
