Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic Responds to Manchester United and Tottenham Transfer Rumors
Igor Matanovic, the Freiburg striker who has been in exceptional form this Bundesliga season, has finally spoken out about rumors linking him with moves to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the buzz surrounding his potential switch to the Premier League, Matanovic says his full attention is on performing for Julian Schuster's side.
Interest from Manchester United and Tottenham
Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a bid for the 23-year-old forward. The Red Devils are particularly keen as they look for a replacement for Joshua Zirkzee, currently linked with Fiorentina. Yet, Matanovic made it clear that no talks have taken place from his end.
- Current Form: Four goals in four Bundesliga matches
- Recent Performance: Scored against Werder Bremen
- Height: 6ft 5in
Matanovic's Statement on Transfer Rumors
"As far as I’m concerned, I’m currently at Freiburg. There has been absolutely no contact with anyone from my side," Matanovic told reporters after the match against Werder Bremen.
The striker attributes his recent success not only to physical training but also to mental clarity. He said, "Football is much more a mental game. If you’re clear-headed, not overthinking, and confident, things fall into place. When I start doubting myself, it just doesn’t work."
A Breakout Season in Germany
Matanovic's rise began when he moved from Eintracht Frankfurt to Freiburg last summer. In his first campaign, he scored 15 goals across all competitions and helped Freiburg reach the Europa League final, where they fell to Aston Villa.
Regarding his decision to join Freiburg, he was direct: "Yes, of course. It was a huge step. Thanks to Freiburg, I made it to the World Cup, which was a great achievement for me as a young player." Though he didn’t score during his appearances for Croatia at the tournament, the experience seemed to energize his domestic form.
Transfer Window and Future Prospects
Matanovic remains under contract with Freiburg until June 2029, meaning the club holds a strong position. Unless an exceptional offer arrives before the transfer deadline on Tuesday, he is expected to stay and continue leading Freiburg's attack.
- Contract Length: Until June 2029
- Transfer Deadline: Upcoming Tuesday
- Next Focus: Maintaining scoring streak and team momentum
