Hull City Break Transfer Record for Nobel Mendy

Hull City have ripped up their transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract, with an option for a further year, in a move that eclipses the fee Hull paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos.

The club have not disclosed the exact figure, but they confirmed it surpasses the £20m plus add-ons spent on Tzolakis. Until this summer, Hull’s transfer record had stood untouched since 2016, when they paid £13m to sign Ryan Mason from Tottenham.

Now Mendy sits at the top of that list.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” Mendy said after completing the move. “I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Mendy arrives after a standout year in Spain. He began his career at Paris FC before moving to La Liga, where he scored twice in 28 games during his only season with Rayo Vallecano. His final appearance for the club came on one of the biggest stages of his career so far: the Conference League final, where Rayo lost to Crystal Palace.

It was not his first taste of that occasion. The defender also reached the Conference League final the previous year with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea.

On the international stage, Mendy has already broken through with Senegal. His first cap came in March in a match against The Gambia.

A new defensive leader, a new club record, and a player openly embracing the Premier League challenge – Hull have made their intentions for the next phase of their project unmistakably clear.
