Hull City have underlined their Premier League ambition with another bold swing in the market, sealing a club-record deal for centre-back Mendy from Rayo Vallecano.

The 21-year-old has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with Hull retaining an option to stretch the agreement by a further season. It is a long-term bet on a defender they believe can anchor their return to the top flight.

The fee remains officially undisclosed, but club figures have confirmed it eclipses the record Hull set only weeks ago when Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis arrived from Olympiacos for more than £20 million plus add-ons. That benchmark has not just been broken. It has been brushed aside.

For Hull, newly promoted and gearing up for the glare of the Premier League, this is a statement. For Mendy, it is the realisation of a childhood target.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” the Senegal international told the club’s media, his delight obvious. He described himself as “a very athletic player” and “a defender at heart”, stressing his appetite for playing out from the back with composure but stepping in aggressively when the moment demands it.

He has wanted the Premier League stage “since I was little,” he said. Now it is in front of him, and he insists he is ready for the challenge.

Mendy does not arrive as a raw prospect without exposure to pressure. In his single La Liga season with Rayo Vallecano, he made 28 appearances and chipped in with two goals, hinting at a threat in the opposition box to go with his defensive work.

His European record is even more striking. He has reached the final of the Conference League in each of the last two seasons, an extraordinary run for a player of his age. This year he went all the way with Rayo Vallecano before losing to Crystal Palace. The season before, he was part of the Real Betis squad that marched to the same showpiece, only to fall to Chelsea.

Those back-to-back encounters with Premier League opposition in European finals have given him a clear look at the intensity and quality that awaits in England. Hull are banking on that experience shortening his adaptation time.

On the international front, Mendy’s rise has already been recognised. He earned his first senior cap for Senegal in March in a fixture against The Gambia, a significant step for a defender widely viewed as one of West Africa’s most promising young stoppers.

This move makes him Hull City’s eighth signing of a hectic summer window following promotion. The Tigers’ rebuild is almost complete, the pieces sliding into place as the opening day looms.
