Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Nobel Mendy

Hull City have torn up their own transfer history to land Nobel Mendy, completing a club-record deal for the Rayo Vallecano defender on a long-term contract.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year agreement with the option of a further year, underlining just how central the Senegal international is to Hull’s plans.

The fee remains officially undisclosed, but the club have confirmed it eclipses the £20m plus add-ons they paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos. That move had already smashed the previous benchmark: the £13m spent on Ryan Mason from Tottenham back in 2016.

Now Mendy sits at the top of that list.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” he said after completing the move. He described himself as “a very athletic player” and “a defender at heart”, adding that he relishes stepping out from the back “cleanly and aggressively when needed”.

This is not just a big transfer for Hull. It’s the fulfilment of a long-held ambition for the defender.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it,” Mendy said.

The move caps a rapid rise. Mendy came through at Paris FC before heading to Spain, where he spent last season in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano. He scored twice in 28 games in his only campaign with the Madrid club and ended it on a painful note, starting in the Conference League final defeat by Crystal Palace.

It was a familiar stage. The year before, he had also reached the Conference League final with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea.

On the international scene, Mendy’s senior career with Senegal is just beginning. He earned his first cap in March, featuring against The Gambia.

Now comes the real test: the Premier League, a record fee on his shoulders, and a club betting big that their new defender at heart can anchor the next phase of Hull City’s evolution.
