Hojbjerg Stripped of Marseille Captaincy After Newcastle Refusal

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been stripped of the Marseille captaincy after refusing a move to Newcastle United, triggering open tension between the club’s hierarchy and head coach Bruno Genesio.

Captaincy torn away after Newcastle snub

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle had identified the Dane as his preferred replacement for Bruno Guimaraes, with sporting director Ross Wilson driving negotiations. Marseille were prepared to cash in, agreeing to a £15 million deal with the Premier League side.

Hojbjerg, though, does not want the move. His stance has angered club owner Frank McCourt and prompted a swift, brutal response: the armband has been taken away.

Despite the off-field storm, Hojbjerg started against Atletico Madrid yesterday and completed the match. The visual symbol of the power struggle came at kick-off. The captain’s armband, once his, sat on the arm of Timothy Weah instead.

Genesio did not hide his frustration when asked about the decision after the game.

“It is a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management,” he said on Friday. “If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it is not a decision that I agree with.

“But I am an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it.”

The message from upstairs is clear: if a player will not follow the club’s transfer plan, the club will move on without him – at least symbolically.

Newcastle forced to rethink midfield plans

For Newcastle, the saga now looks like a dead end. Signing a player openly uninterested in joining makes little sense, and the Magpies are already turning their attention elsewhere.

They have put a three-year contract on the table for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha as they hunt for steel and experience in the middle of the pitch. Yet even there, resistance awaits. The Portuguese midfielder prefers a move to Aston Villa.

One target unwilling, another eyeing a rival. Newcastle’s midfield rebuild is on, but the market is pushing back.
