Harvey Elliott Nears Liverpool Exit as Valencia Talks Progress

Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool story looks close to its final chapter.

Less than a week after being left out of the matchday squad against Newcastle, the 23-year-old is reportedly on the brink of a move to Valencia, with personal terms said to be agreed after positive talks.

For Elliott, once tipped as a long-term Anfield star, the slide has been sharp. A bruising loan spell at Aston Villa last season stalled his momentum badly, and when he returned to Liverpool in the summer, his future was already clouded by doubt.

The clearest sign came against Newcastle. Lewis Koumas and James McConnell, both younger and less experienced, were preferred in the squad. Elliott was nowhere to be seen.

Manager Andoni Iraola didn’t hide the reality of the situation when he was asked about those omissions ahead of the Nottingham Forest game.

“With Harvey, with [Luke] Chambers, with some of the players that I decided – because I can only choose 20 – to leave out, it’s a matter of finding the balance on the bench,” he said.

“In Harvey’s case, he’s trying, he’s improving every week, but I still prefer other options.

“Probably I was in doubt with James McConnell in terms of getting into the squad, and I decided to put James in the squad.

“But it’s another new week, new chances for everyone, and they have to keep that mentality.”

The message was clear: Elliott is working, but others are ahead of him. On a bench with only 20 places, sentiment doesn’t count.

That context frames the Valencia move. Multiple reports say the Spanish club have reached an agreement with Elliott on personal terms, leaving the key question on the table: loan or permanent?

With the midfielder now into the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract, a permanent deal looks the logical outcome for all parties. Liverpool risk losing him for nothing next summer; Elliott needs a fresh start and regular football.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Valencia have opened negotiations with Liverpool, trying to strike a club-to-club agreement that would end Elliott’s time on Merseyside.

His drop down the pecking order has been accelerated by recruitment. The arrival of Florian Wirtz last summer pushed Elliott further away from the central attacking roles he might once have claimed as his own. Any hope of reinventing himself out wide has also been crushed, with Bradley Barcola incoming to strengthen Liverpool’s options in the wide areas.
