Countdown to La Liga: Hansi Flick's 11 Days to Shape Barcelona

Hansi Flick’s countdown has started. Eleven days. That is all the new FC Barcelona coach has to stitch together a team scattered by a long World Cup summer before the 2026/27 La Liga season finally begins.

Because so many of their players went deep into the tournament, both Barça and Real Madrid have been granted a delayed start. While most of the league kicks off a week earlier, Spain’s two giants will only enter the fray later in August.

Real Madrid head to Catalonia first, visiting Espanyol on August 22. Barcelona follow a day later, opening their campaign away at Elche on August 23.

Flick’s first competitive line-up in Spain will be on the road, with little margin for error and even less time on the training pitch.

The German coach now has roughly a week and a half to bring back his stars, recharge them, and tune them into his ideas. Lamine Yamal, Pedri and the rest of the World Cup core will need to switch from international drama to club demands at speed.

Some have already pressed fast-forward.

Gavi was the first to report back. The midfielder started Spain’s opening 0-0 draw with Cabo Verde in Group H, then saw his spot on the left wing handed to Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena for the rest of the tournament. As Spain marched on, Gavi’s role shrank, but his early return has given Flick a valuable head start with one of his most intense players.

The trickle soon became a flow. Eric Garcia and goalkeeper Joan Garcia arrived on August 9, joining the group as preseason work sharpened. On the same day, Anthony Gordon and Jules Kounde checked in after going the distance in North America with England and France, both reaching the semifinals.

Their World Cup ended in chaos and goals. Gordon and Kounde faced each other in a wild third-place playoff, a 10-goal thriller that England edged 6-4. Bukayo Saka stole the show there with a hat trick, while both Barça men emptied the tank one last time before flying back to club duty.

Now comes the reset.

Kounde, a mainstay at right back in recent seasons, returns to find real competition emerging from within La Masia. Xavi Espart, a 2007 graduate of the academy, is pushing hard for minutes and could threaten the Frenchman’s hold on the position this term.
