Hamburg Eye David Alaba as Defensive Crisis Deepens

David Alaba’s name is back on the Bundesliga rumour mill – and in a context few would have predicted. According to Sport BILD, the 34-year-old could make a sensational return to Germany with Hamburg, who are scrambling for solutions at the back after a nightmare start under Merlin Polzin.

The Austrian is a free agent after ending a five-year stay at Real Madrid at the close of the 2025-26 season. Because he is unattached, Hamburg could register him immediately despite the transfer window being shut, a loophole that suddenly looks very attractive for a side rooted to the bottom of the table and leaking goals.

This is not a luxury discussion. It is an emergency.

Hamburg have been battered in recent weeks, slumping to the foot of the Bundesliga after a miserable run that includes 5-0 thrashings by both Mainz and Leipzig. No goals scored, confidence shredded, a defence in disarray. Polzin needs leadership, organisation and a voice at the back. On paper, Alaba offers all three.

But the story is not that simple.

Sport BILD reports that Hamburg’s hierarchy at the Volksparkstadion are wrestling with two hard realities: money and injuries. Alaba’s wage demands are expected to sit well above the club’s current budget, a major obstacle for a side already stretched financially. His recent fitness record also raises red flags, with the defender having missed significant spells in Madrid due to various problems.

Those concerns have pushed another name into sharper focus.

Sport BILD notes that experienced centre-back Jannik Vestergaard is viewed as a more realistic alternative, both in terms of salary and risk profile. The Denmark international does not carry Alaba’s glittering medal haul, but he represents a steadier, more attainable option for a club trying to stabilise before it can dream again.

Alaba, though, remains the headline act.

He left the Santiago Bernabeu with an outstanding haul of 11 major trophies: two Champions League titles, two La Liga crowns and a stack of domestic and international honours across 131 appearances. When fit, he anchored one of Europe’s most demanding back lines, stepping into midfield, dictating play, and setting standards in the dressing room.

Even as injuries have bitten in recent seasons, the former Bayern Munich mainstay has not stepped away from the grind. He continues intensive individual sessions on the pitch, working to preserve his physical level and sharpness on the ball. Clubs still view his experience as gold dust – the kind that can change a dressing room and drag a struggling side through a crisis.

That is exactly what Hamburg crave. A winning mentality. A leader who has seen everything. Someone who can walk into a chaotic back four and impose order.

They are not alone in their interest.

Serie A side Lazio are also tracking Alaba’s situation, according to the same report, while Mexican giants Club America have entered the race as well. Both would offer different challenges and atmospheres, but all three clubs share one need: a versatile defender who can still operate at a high level if his body holds up.

Hamburg’s timeline, though, is brutally short.

Polzin’s team host FC Koln on matchday four of the Bundesliga on Saturday, September 19, in what already feels like a pivotal early-season fixture. After successive heavy defeats without finding the net, they need a reaction, any sign of resistance, before the league pauses for the international break.

That break will not bring much comfort. Waiting on the other side is a daunting run, starting with a trip to Hoffenheim on October 10. More pressure, more questions, and, if nothing changes, potentially more damage to a fragile campaign.

So the dilemma at Hamburg is stark. Do they stretch their finances and gamble on Alaba’s body to buy instant leadership? Or do they take the safer route with someone like Vestergaard and hope solidity, not stardust, is enough to save their season?
