Guardiola Champions Manchester City Move for Eichhorn
Manchester City are moving aggressively to land one of Germany’s brightest young talents, with Pep Guardiola personally championing a move for Hertha Berlin prodigy Eichhorn.
The 16-year-old midfielder has exploded onto the radar of Europe’s elite after a record-breaking season in the 2. Bundesliga, and City believe they have found a way to secure his future without stalling his development.
City’s Two-Club Masterplan
City’s hierarchy have drawn up a detailed pathway for Eichhorn, one that stretches far beyond a simple transfer fee and unveiling at the Etihad.
According to Sky Sport, the Premier League champions plan to trigger the teenager’s release clause this summer, then immediately send him on loan to Bayer Leverkusen. The idea is clear: let him sharpen his game in the Bundesliga with the German champions before he ever sets foot in Manchester.
For City, it is a calculated long-term play. For Eichhorn, it is a chance to step straight into top-flight football in his home country, under a club renowned for developing young talent, while knowing a move to England is already locked in.
Leverkusen, for their part, are described as “stepping on the gas” to secure him. Partnering with City would hand them a high-ceiling midfielder without the financial strain of a permanent deal. A win for their squad depth, without the usual risk.
A Record-Breaking Rise
Eichhorn’s surge has been rapid and ruthless.
At 16 years and 287 days, he became the youngest goalscorer in 2. Bundesliga history when he struck against Greuther Fürth on Sunday. One clean finish, and suddenly scout networks across Europe snapped to attention.
He is already a German U17 international and has clocked 18 competitive appearances for Hertha Berlin’s senior side, scoring twice. For a player still in his mid-teens, those numbers speak loudly enough.
Clubs have listened. Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are all in the chase, each keen to keep one of the country’s standout prospects inside the Bundesliga ecosystem. City, though, currently sit in pole position, armed with both financial muscle and a tailored development plan.
The Clause That Changes Everything
On paper, Hertha Berlin hold Eichhorn until 2029. In reality, their grip may not last the summer.
A release clause in his contract becomes active at the end of the season. Its value is reported to sit between €10 million and €12m, with the final figure shaped by several conditions: the division Hertha are in – currently the 2. Bundesliga – the location of the buying club, and whether that club competes in European competition.
For a side of City’s stature, that price tag is modest. For Hertha, it is a vulnerability they can do little about.
The clause means that, despite the long-term deal, the Berlin club could be powerless to stop their teenage star from walking away. The only real question is where he goes, not if he goes.
A Talent on the Move
Eichhorn made his professional debut in August. Less than a year on, he is weighing up offers from some of the biggest institutions in European football.
Those close to the situation expect him to leave Berlin this summer regardless of the destination. The sense is that he feels ready for a new challenge, and the structure of City’s proposal — buy now, loan to Leverkusen, then integrate in England — offers a clear, staged route to the very top.
Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig will not back down easily. Leverkusen want him in their colours as soon as possible. Hertha are braced for impact.
City, though, have something different: Guardiola’s direct involvement and a long-term roadmap that treats a 16-year-old not as a quick asset flip, but as a future first-team pillar.
If Eichhorn believes that story, the next great German midfield export may soon belong to Manchester.
