Gjivai Zechiël Reflects on Collapsed Lille Move: Grateful to Stay at Feyenoord

Gjivai Zechiël stood on the brink of a major move this summer. Lille OSC pushed hard, Feyenoord held firm, and the 22-year-old midfielder now looks back on a transfer saga that could have reshaped his career.

The French club did not come knocking lightly. Lille submitted several bids, with the final offer reportedly rising to around €17 million including bonuses. Serious money, serious intent.

“That was pretty serious,” Zechiël admits in conversation with Voetbal International. At the time, he even felt the switch might be the right next step. “At that moment, it seemed better for me from a sporting point of view.”

Then the dust settled. The deal never came. Feyenoord’s hierarchy had drawn a clear line: Zechiël was seen as a key figure for the present and the future, and they would only consider letting him go if there was no other choice. That moment never arrived.

Now, with the transfer window closed and the new season underway, the midfielder’s tone has shifted.

“Looking back, I am grateful and happy that I am here, because I am simply doing well here,” he says. The word “here” keeps returning. Rotterdam, De Kuip, Feyenoord. That’s where he feels anchored. “I feel at home here, and I am grateful to be out on the pitch here. I am happy that I get to play for this club.”

The feeling isn’t just emotional; it’s tactical, too. Zechiël talks about growing into his role, learning the nuances of the team around him, and building a bond with the staff.

“In the end, you grow into the team, you start to understand your role in the team, but also the staff you are dealing with. That is, of course, also an important part of it. The staff and our style of play suit me very well.”

Once the Lille chapter closed, Feyenoord didn’t waste time. At the start of September, ESPN reporter Sinclair Bischop revealed that the club had reached a verbal agreement with Zechiël on a contract extension. His current deal already runs until mid-2028, but Feyenoord want to lock in their man even more firmly.

Zechiël sounds optimistic when asked about that agreement. “If everything goes well, that should be possible,” the right-footer says, hinting that only the final details remain.

On the pitch, he is backing up the board’s faith with numbers that are hard to ignore. Feyenoord have played six competitive matches so far this season; Zechiël has produced four goals and three assists. Those are not the figures of a squad player. Those are the returns of a midfielder who has taken centre stage.

A few weeks ago, he was almost wearing Lille’s colours. Instead, he is driving Feyenoord’s season from midfield, contract talks ongoing, value rising. The transfer collapsed — his status in Rotterdam did not.
