Gavin Bazunu Joins Bolton Wanderers: A Fresh Start in the Championship

Gavin Bazunu has drawn a line under his Southampton spell and dropped back into the Championship with Bolton Wanderers, signing a three-year deal that feels every inch like a reset.

At 24, the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper needed this. Needed games. Needed a dressing room where he is walking in as a contender to start, not a name sliding down the teamsheet.

His departure from St Mary’s ends a stop-start chapter that never quite lived up to the early noise. Bazunu arrived from Manchester City in 2022 with a reputation as one of Ireland’s brightest young talents, but by last season he had lost his grip on the No 1 shirt. Nineteen Championship appearances tell only part of the story; he finished the campaign on the fringes.

The second half of the 2025-26 season underlined the frustration. A loan to Stoke City was supposed to reignite things, only for injuries to bite and rhythm to disappear. Before that, a stint with Standard Liege in Belgium had offered experience, but not a permanent platform to build on.

So he has turned to Bolton.

The fee remains undisclosed, but the intention is clear. Bazunu wants minutes, not promises.

"It's obviously a club with massive history. I see it as a place where I can come and progress my personal career, while helping the team with their ambitions of getting back to where they belong," he told Wanderers TV, laying out both his own agenda and the club’s.

This is not just about Bolton’s climb. It is about a goalkeeper trying to reclaim his own trajectory. Bazunu has 22 senior caps for Ireland, yet his last appearance came back in March 2024 in a friendly against Switzerland. His most recent call-up under Heimir Hallgrimsson was last November. For a player once seen as Ireland’s long-term No 1, that gap matters.

"I want to get back to being in a position where I’m playing week in, week out and enjoying my football again. My big aim and ambition here is to play as many games as I can and show my levels," he said, the message as direct as it gets from a modern keeper.

He spoke, too, of a dressing room being rebuilt with similar hunger.

"I’m excited to be here and excited for what’s to come. I’m sure all the other new signings will have said the same thing, but we’re excited to get going, show our qualities and show where this team belongs."

For Bolton, a club with its own sense of unfinished business in the Championship, Bazunu offers international experience, top-flight exposure and the determination of a player who knows his next move has to stick.
