Gattuso Ends Icardi Transfer Speculation: We Gave Our Word

Gennaro Gattuso has moved decisively to end the swirl of rumours linking his club with Mauro Icardi, insisting the door is closed out of respect for the players already signed this summer.

Facing the media before his side’s next league match, the coach was asked once again about a possible move for the former Inter captain. This time, he cut it off at the root.

“Let's put this whole Icardi mess to rest,” Gattuso said, speaking via Calciomercato.com. “He has scored 250 goals in his career, and nobody questions his value. We made our choices; we signed [Andrea] Pinamonti and [Albert] Gudmundsson, and when you give your word to players, you can't go back on it.”

That was the key line. Not tactics. Not budgets. A promise.

With the transfer window now closed, Gattuso underlined that any late move for another forward would not just be unnecessary, it would be unfair – both to Icardi and to the players already in the dressing room.

“With all due respect to Icardi,” he continued, “I've discussed it with the president and the director, and it's right to stick to what we have.”

The stance is also rooted in a very practical concern: the squad is already swollen. Gattuso admitted that numbers are so high in some positions that players are being squeezed out of full sessions.

“Right now, we already have players who have to sit out training because we have six full-backs,” he revealed. “When Marusic returns, two of them will have to be left out, and that doesn't look good.”

The message was clear. The market noise can rage on outside, but inside Gattuso’s camp, the hierarchy is set, the group is chosen, and the focus now falls squarely on making this crowded squad work.
