Gary Neville Backs Arsenal to Win Premier League Again Due to Defensive Strength
Gary Neville has expressed strong confidence that Arsenal will secure the Premier League title again this season. He points to their defensive organization under Mikel Arteta as a key advantage over rivals like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
Arsenal’s Defensive Edge
Neville highlights the impressive defensive squad that Arsenal has built, suggesting it is unmatched in the league. Even though Manchester United and Chelsea have recorded wins recently, he believes Arsenal's defense is on another level. Chelsea, for instance, nearly lost a three-goal lead against Brighton, and United had to rely heavily on Bruno Fernandes to secure a high-scoring 5-2 win.
Strength in Numbers at the Back
Discussing Arsenal’s recruitment, Neville mentions the addition of Ezri Konsa to an already deep defensive lineup including:
- Jurrien Timber
- Ben White
- Cristhian Mosquera
- William Saliba
- Gabriel Magalhaes
- Piero Hincapie
- Riccardo Calafiori
- Myles Lewis-Skelly
Neville sees this as Arsenal committing fully to a defensive strategy, aiming to be far ahead defensively compared to all other teams. He even suggests that while Arsenal’s forwards might be swapped with those from United, Liverpool, or Chelsea, their defensive and midfield players would outclass those rivals.
Concerns About Rival Teams’ Defenses
Neville expressed doubts about Chelsea’s defensive stability under manager Xabi Alonso. Despite individual talent among their defenders, Neville feels they lack the cohesive defensive unit that Arsenal possesses. He pointed out recent lineup changes including goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez joining Chelsea, but still sees their backline as unsettled.
He contrasted this with Arsenal’s established back four featuring Timber, Calafiori, Saliba, and Gabriel with goalkeeper David Raya. Neville noted this is the only truly solid defensive unit he sees in the league right now, aside from historical examples like Manchester City and Liverpool when they won titles.
Additional Criticism of Liverpool and Manchester United
Regarding Liverpool, Neville mentioned their powerful attack featuring Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz but criticized their lack of quality full-back options for manager Andoni Iraola. Similarly, he questioned United's squad depth after Leny Yoro was used as cover in a wide position instead of a specialist full-back.
Upcoming Challenge for Arsenal
Arsenal will travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa on Monday night. Villa is eager to recover following a heavy 4-0 loss to Brighton. A strong defensive showing by Arsenal in this match would reinforce Neville's view that they are the team to beat this season.
