Galatasaray Reopens Talks for Rafael Leao Transfer

Galatasaray have returned to the table for Rafael Leao, sensing an opening in a transfer saga that has dragged through the summer without a decisive bid.

Multiple outlets in Italy and Turkiye report that the Istanbul giants are back in direct talks with Milan over the Portuguese forward. For now, it’s all words and no paperwork: there is still no formal, written offer on the Rossoneri’s desk.

What has changed is Milan’s stance. The club had initially looked for around €50m plus €10m in add-ons, a figure that scared off early suitors and left negotiations stuck in neutral. With no club willing to hit that number, Milan are now understood to be ready to discuss a fee potentially below €50m, with bonuses on top. That shift has reopened doors that looked firmly shut a few weeks ago.

Galatasaray arrive at those doors after being knocked back elsewhere. Their €45m proposal for Gabriel Martinelli was rejected by Arsenal, who not only turned down the offer but made it clear the Brazilian has no interest in a move to Istanbul. With that route closed, attention has swung back to Leao.

The Turkish champions are not alone. Milan have held conversations with Benfica, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray over the 25-year-old, yet none of those discussions progressed to the stage of an official bid. The distance between Milan’s valuation and the figures being floated by interested clubs was simply too wide to bridge.

Now the numbers are softening, the dynamic changes. A lower base fee, supported by add-ons, gives Galatasaray fresh hope of landing a marquee name who, not long ago, expected a very different market.

Leao and Milan both anticipated that once his availability became clear, heavyweights from Europe’s top five leagues would circle. That wave of interest never truly arrived. No Premier League or La Liga powerhouse stepped up with the kind of offer that would have matched Milan’s early expectations or the player’s ambitions.

All of this unfolds against a contract clock that is ticking loudly at San Siro. Leao’s deal runs until June 2028, but there is no appetite on his side to extend. Inside the club, the message is just as firm: Milan are not planning to reopen renewal talks.

That leaves a blunt reality. With no new contract on the horizon and the forward keen on a new chapter, a sale this summer is moving from possibility to near certainty.
