Galatasaray Pursues Fifth Consecutive Title as Rivals Strengthen

The Turkish Super Lig is back on Friday night, and it returns to a familiar scene: Rams Park, lights blazing, Galatasaray walking out as champions. Again.

Okan Buruk’s side start the 2026-27 campaign not just as favourites, but as the benchmark for an entire league. Four titles in a row, 26 in total, and now the chance to pull off something no Turkish club has ever done — five consecutive championships.

They open against newly promoted Corum FK at 9.30 pm local time (1830GMT), a gentle-looking fixture on paper, but also the first glimpse of whether the champions can keep the rest at arm’s length for another year.

Istanbul giants reload

The gap to Galatasaray has irritated their rivals for years. This summer, they’ve thrown money, reputation and ambition at it.

Fenerbahce, runners-up last season and still haunted by a title drought stretching back to 2014, have gone for sheer star power. Romelu Lukaku arrived from Napoli this week, a heavyweight signing to lead the line for an Istanbul club desperate to end more than a decade of frustration.

He joins a revamped squad that already includes Mason Greenwood, brought in from Olympique Marseille to add cutting edge on the flank, and Netherlands defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City to anchor the back line. It is a squad built not just to compete, but to finally finish the job.

Fenerbahce begin away to Gençlerbirligi in Ankara on Saturday night. For a club of their size, anything less than a title charge will feel like failure.

Across the city, Besiktas have refused to sit still. The Black Eagles have sharpened their attack with Serbia international Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus and Belgian winger Leandro Trossard from Arsenal. Both arrive with expectations as heavy as their résumés.

Besiktas open at home to Eyupspor on Sunday, a fixture that should offer an early indication of how quickly their new frontline can click.

Salah shakes up the old order

The most dramatic move of the window, though, came far from Istanbul’s familiar skyline.

Trabzonspor, determined to punch through the dominance of the big three, have landed Egypt captain Mohamed Salah on a two-year deal. It is a statement that reverberates beyond the Black Sea — a global star choosing Trabzon as his next stage, and a clear sign the club intend to be more than a supporting act in this title race.

They travel to Kasimpasa on Saturday at 7 pm (1600GMT), a tricky opener for a side suddenly carrying a different kind of pressure: expectation.

New faces, new stories

Eighteen clubs will contest the 69th season of Türkiye’s top flight, and not all the intrigue sits at the top.

Erzurumspor, Amedspor and Corum FK have all climbed into the Super Lig. For Amedspor, it is uncharted territory — their first-ever season in the division, and a debut that will be watched closely across the country. Erzurumspor return after a five-year absence, hungry to prove they belong back among the elite.

Amedspor face Erzurumspor FK on Sunday at 9.30 pm (1830GMT), a meeting of two promoted sides with very different histories but the same immediate goal: survival.

The opening round stretches through the weekend. After Galatasaray’s curtain-raiser on Friday, Saturday brings Kasimpasa vs. Trabzonspor and Konyaspor vs. Çaykur Rizespor at 7 pm (1600GMT), followed by Gaziantep FK vs. Alanyaspor and Gençlerbirligi vs. Fenerbahce at 9.30 pm (1830GMT).

Sunday’s schedule features Istanbul Basaksehir vs. Kocaelispor at 7 pm (1600GMT), then Amed SF vs. Erzurumspor FK and Besiktas vs. Eyupspor at 9.30 pm (1830GMT). The first week closes on Monday night with Samsunspor hosting Goztepe at 9.30 pm (1830GMT).

The season runs through to May 2027. Between now and then, one question will hang over every packed stadium and every high-profile signing: can anyone finally knock Galatasaray off their throne, or are we about to witness history?
