Galatasaray's Bold €45 Million Bid for Gabriel Martinelli

Galatasaray have tested Arsenal’s resolve with a bold €45 million (£38m) bid for Gabriel Martinelli, putting one of Mikel Arteta’s key attacking pillars at the centre of a major transfer tug-of-war.

The offer, reported by transfer specialist Florian Plettenberg, is now on the table at the Emirates, forcing Arsenal’s hierarchy into a decision they never wanted to confront this summer: cash in on a player entering his peak, or shut the door on a sizeable windfall and double down on the current project.

The Turkish champions are not flirting with the idea. They are all-in on Martinelli.

The Istanbul giants have made the Brazilian their undisputed top target for this window, seeing him as the statement signing to elevate them from domestic dominance to genuine Champions League threat. Recent years have already underlined their ambition, with Galatasaray luring big names like Victor Osimhen and Wilfried Zaha to RAMS Park. Martinelli would be another level again – younger, quicker, and still climbing.

This is not just about adding another winger. For Galatasaray, Martinelli would be the face of their European push.

Arteta’s dilemma

For Arteta, the timing is awkward and the implications are huge.

Arsenal’s attacking structure has already shifted this summer. Leandro Trossard has left for Besiktas, trimming depth in the wide areas, while Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge as the only new offensive option so far. Against that backdrop, losing Martinelli would rip a hole in a front line that has become one of the Premier League’s most feared.

He is not a squad piece. He is a cornerstone.

Since arriving from Ituano in 2019 as a relative unknown, Martinelli has exploded into one of the league’s most dynamic forwards. Comfortable across the front three but devastating on the left, he has grown into a fan favourite and a tactical reference point for Arteta’s high-energy, high-pressing style.

At 25, he is stepping into his prime with serious mileage already at the top level. Last season he played 53 times in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists. Those numbers came in a campaign that saw Arsenal finally reclaim the Premier League title for the first time since 2004 and push all the way to the Champions League final, where they fell to Paris Saint-Germain.

You don’t replace that profile easily, or cheaply.

The broader body of work is just as compelling. Since landing in North London, Martinelli has become one of the faces of Arsenal’s resurgence. He has helped the club lift the Premier League and the 2023 FA Community Shield, driving the Gunners back towards the elite after years of drift.

Across all competitions, he has already racked up 278 appearances in an Arsenal shirt, producing 62 goals and 36 assists. Those are not the figures of a player you offload lightly, no matter how tempting the cheque.

Yet €45 million is not a trivial sum, especially in a summer where financial balance and squad evolution sit side by side on the agenda.

Arsenal’s wider picture

Arsenal have not stood still in the market. Illan Meslier has come in to reinforce the goalkeeping department, Tzolis offers a fresh attacking option, and Bruno Guimaraes adds steel and sophistication to the midfield.

The squad is being reshaped to defend their title and go again in Europe. Any decision on Martinelli slots directly into that bigger puzzle: do Arsenal lean on continuity with a proven core, or accept a sizeable offer and trust their recruitment to find the next difference-maker?
